President & CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce

Today marks my first official day as President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. I’m thrilled and honored to take on this role.   I’m grateful for the strong foundation laid by the Canadian Chamber team and the outstanding leadership of my predecessor, Perrin Beatty, P.C., O.C. Beatty. I look forward to building on this foundation to elevate the power of our united voice and expand the impact of the Chamber Network.   I believe we are most successful when we leverage our connections to truly understand and define a problem. Furthermore, I believe that the solutions to our biggest economic challenges are found at the community level—this has been my experience.   Growing up in rural Saskatchewan, I learned firsthand that there was no issue too great for the community to come together to understand and solve. This spirit is at the very heart of the Chamber movement. Businesses, along with local Chambers and Boards of Trade, have always had a significant impact on their communities.   I’m passionate about the critical role that thriving businesses and a strong economy play in a healthy society. Both my volunteer work with the Canadian Chamber as a director and Chair of the Board, and my experience in business, have shown me our country’s enormous potential. A better life for all Canadians is achieved when the positive influence of business on everyday lives shapes federal policymaking through grassroots thinking.   Together with an incredible team, our members, and a national network of Chambers and Boards of Trade, I have the privilege of serving Canadian businesses. I am deeply grateful to them for fueling economic growth, creating jobs, and building our communities. I am looking forward to the work ahead.

  • Canada’s real GDP grew by an annualized 2.1% in the second quarter of 2024, outperforming market expectations. This growth was largely fueled by increased government spending and a notable uptick in business investment. However, despite this positive development, underlying economic weaknesses persist. In his latest commentary, our Senior Economist, Andrew DiCapua, provides insights into these dynamics and anticipates a cautious stance from the Bank of Canada moving forward. • Today’s announcement by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) confirms our longstanding concern that the digital services tax (DST) is damaging our most lucrative trading partnership at a critical time as we look ahead to a review of CUSMA. This only stands to hurt Canadians as they struggle to afford the goods and services they need. We reiterate that to protect Canadians, the government needs to continue negotiating with the United States and halt the imposition of a unilateral DST, or at the very least, ensure that regulations do not include inflammatory retroactivity to 2022. ➡ https://lnkd.in/efc3Er_7 #DST #DigitalServicesTax #CanadaUS #BilateralRelationship #Affordability #Trade #USTrade #CUSMA

When the Canadian Chamber of Commerce launched its Housing and Development Strategy Council a year ago, we brought in industry leaders from across the country who build homes, know the challenges, and could get business and government working together in the shared pursuit of homes Canadians can afford. The message was clear from our membership: our economic future depends on getting this right.   One of those leaders is Wesgroup Properties, and the biggest lesson we learned over the course of the year is that the obstacles they face in British Columbia aren’t unique to their province:   🟥 Municipal red tape 🛠️ Construction costs 🗺️ Land values 🧾 Government fees 💳 Availability of capital   Companies like Wesgroup and the other private sector leaders around the table want to invest in the housing Canada needs, but will key decision makers let them do it? Homes don’t just happen – learn more about what’s keeping housing affordability out of reach. 👇
