Canada’s real GDP grew by an annualized 2.1% in the second quarter of 2024, outperforming market expectations. This growth was largely fueled by increased government spending and a notable uptick in business investment. However, despite this positive development, underlying economic weaknesses persist. Today’s announcement by the United States Trade Representative (USTR) confirms our longstanding concern that the digital services tax (DST) is damaging our most lucrative trading partnership at a critical time as we look ahead to a review of CUSMA. This only stands to hurt Canadians as they struggle to afford the goods and services they need. When the Canadian Chamber of Commerce launched its Housing and Development Strategy Council a year ago, we brought in industry leaders from across the country who build homes, know the challenges, and could get business and government working together in the shared pursuit of homes Canadians can afford.
