A special Labour Day message from Jason Rowe, Canadian District Vice President: 🇨🇦 Brothers and Sisters, today we celebrate and honour the hardworking men and women who have built our great nation. Labour Day is especially meaningful to us at the UBC, as it was first proposed as a national holiday by our Union’s co-founder, Peter J. McGuire, in 1882. Over 140 years later, we continue to lead Canada’s labour movement, fighting for the rights we’ve earned, from the 8-hour workday to safe working conditions. Let’s stand together in solidarity to ensure Canada remains #UBCBuilt. Thank you, and happy Labour Day!

The labour landscape of the 1880s was a far cry from today. In 1887, 700 UBC members joined 1,100 workers in Toronto, demanding a 9-hour workday and a raise from 22.5 cents to 25 cents per hour. Fast forward to the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike, where our members stood united for collective bargaining rights, shaping the future of workers' rights.
