Happy 10th anniversary to our Edmonton and Vancouver public cord blood collection sites! 🥳 Thanks to generous parents, and our partners Lois Hole Hospital for Women in Edmonton and BC Women’s Hospital in Vancouver, we have collected nearly 20,000 units of lifesaving cord blood from babies born at these sites over the last 10 years. Doctors, nurses, hospital staff, Canadian Blood Services staff, elected officials, financial donors, cord blood donors and recipients gathered this week to celebrate this incredible milestone. Cord blood is amazing! It can be used to treat up to 80 diseases and disorders, or for research to advance medical treatments. If not collected and stored in the Canadian Blood Services Cord Blood Bank, it could otherwise be discarded as medical waste. 2025 marks 10 years of dedicated support from our friends at Enterprise Holdings Foundation through their ongoing financial donations. They are giving us all the #ThankfulThursday feels today! ☺️ This generosity would not be possible without the support of Enterprise Holdings employees—including those who dropped off the most recent donation in December! Together, they champion the cause of Canada’s Lifeline. Like all financial donors, their generosity is invested into initiatives that unlock additional impact for patients. Whether that’s by fuelling recruitment of new blood and plasma donors, giving our efforts to train future medical leaders a boost, or helping us drive world-class research. Thank you for being by our side! #CanadasLifeline #MakeAllTheDifference

Canadian Blood Services wishes to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Sam Shemie for being named to the Order of Canada. Dr. Shemie has been our organization’s medical advisor for deceased donation since 2008. We have relied upon his expertise, counted on his leadership and — as have all Canadians — benefited from his professional accomplishments. For more than two decades, Dr. Shemie has been at the forefront of efforts to develop and improve deceased organ donation practices and policies. His pioneering research, advocacy, mentorship and collaborative approach have been instrumental in shaping 23 national leading practice guidelines that promote consistency in practice, minimize diagnostic errors, navigate ethical and legal challenges, and provide a framework for communicating compassionately with families during the tragic loss of a loved one. Dr. Shemie’s commitment to providing high-quality end-of-life care and increasing public awareness has yielded tangible results, including increased donation rates and countless lives saved. It has been an honour for Canadian Blood Services employees to work alongside him and, as an organization, we celebrate this moment and look forward to many more collaborative years ahead. 📸 CTV News Montreal
