How are Canada’s birds doing? The State of Canada’s Birds 2024 helps us answer this question. The State of Canada’s Birds is built on over 50 years of bird monitoring data, much of it collected by volunteer Citizen Scientists. Some of the trends revealed by this report are worrying, like a 67% decline in Grassland Birds due to overwhelming habitat loss. Other trends are uplifting; Waterfowl, Birds of Prey, and Wetland Birds have all increased in population since 1970. Conserva Aves officially expands to Mexico! At COP16 in Cali, Renée González Montagut, General Director of the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN), Elizabeth Gray, Ph.D., CEO of National Audubon Society, and Patrick Nadeau, President & CEO of Birds Canada signed a trilateral agreement to implement Conserva Aves in Mexico. This important collaboration will support community-led and inclusive conservation of important bird habitats in Mexico and lead to the creation and/or expansion of areas voluntarily designated for conservation, contributing to the 30x30 target of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Conserva Aves is a collaborative initiative of American Bird Conservancy, National Audubon Society, BirdLife International, Birds Canada and the Network of Environmental Funds of Latin America and the Caribbean (RedLAC) to protect biodiversity, promote climate resilience and sustainable development. Its execution in Mexico will be led by the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN) in collaboration with Pronatura Sur A.C. and the CONANP -Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas, and funded in part by the Government of Canada (Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada). #ConservAves #30x30 - Conserva Aves s'étend officiellement au Mexique! Birds Canada's President & CEO Patrick Nadeau caught up with BirdLife International's CEO Martin Harper at #COP16 in Colombia, where they discussed several important topics, including Birds Canada's response to the decline of migratory shorebirds, the Conserva Aves Initiative, and Canada's financial contributions towards global conservation efforts.

Le Québec devient le premier État infranational à contribuer au Fonds pour le cadre mondial de la biodiversité (GBFF) du Fonds pour l'environnement mondial (GEF Global Environment Facility) . Le Québec apporte une contribution de 2 millions de dollars canadiens (1,4 million USD), qui s'ajoute aux 161 millions USD annoncés par différents pays lors de la #COP16. Un montant de 200 millions de dollars canadiens a également été annoncé par le Canada en août 2023. Le Fonds pour le cadre mondial de la biodiversité (GBFF) a été créé pour combler le déficit de financement de 200 000 millions USD par an mentionné dans le cadre mondial de la #COP15 (qui doit être atteint d'ici 2030). --- « Le gouvernement du Québec est fier d'être le premier gouvernement infranational à contribuer au Fonds pour le cadre mondial de la biodiversité. At the start of fall, our Motus Wildlife Tracking System and Science in the North teams held a songbird tagging workshop for staff from the NunatuKavut Community Council’s Environment and Natural Resources department. In May, the NunatuKavut Community Council partnered with us to install three Motus tracking stations in southern Labrador and is now building the capacity to tag animals on their land. The workshop included discussions with the Canadian Wildlife Service Atlantic about future collaborations. This project aims to study songbird migration routes in the Atlantic Canada Flyway. Participants successfully deployed 20 radio tags on Hermit Thrushes, American Robins, and Black-throated Green Warblers, while also banding other species like sparrows and chickadees! NCC a collaboré avec Oiseaux Canada pour installer trois stations dans le sud du Labrador en mai dernier et renforcent les capacités de marquage des animaux par Motus. Les partenaires du Service Canadien de la Faune Atlantique ont également participé à l’atelier ce qui a permis de créer des échanges sur de futurs projets collaboratifs avec le programme avec Oiseaux Canada et NCC. Ce projet de marquage vise à étudier les routes migratoires des passereaux dans l’Atlantique canadien. Au total, ils ont déployé avec succès 20 émetteurs radio sur des Merles d’Amérique, Grives solitaires, et des Parulines à gorge noire, et ont également bagué plusieurs espèces de bruants, parulines, mésanges et viréos!
