We're pleased to welcome Darren Tang into his new permanent role with BC Renal Internal Operations! As a Coordinator, Project and Administrative Support, he will work with various provincial committees and support a range of Internal Operations projects. A graduate of Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor's in Health Sciences, Darren began his career in healthcare research, working at both an orthopedic clinic and the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. "I enjoy my collaborative work with other members of BC Renal, as well as my involvement in various projects," Darren says. As climate change continues to impact communities across BC, advancing environmentally sustainable kidney care is of the utmost importance — and that means implementing planetary health strategies across the spectrum of patient care. Renal dietitian Dani Renouf and clinical researcher Michelle Wong co-authored a recent research article in the Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease — "From Prophecy to Plate: How to Actualize a Planetary Menu for Kidney Disease Nutrition" — which outlines how planetary health principles can be integrated into dietary and nutritional choices for kidney patients. The article takes a 3-pronged approach, focusing specifically on "(1) promoting plant-based eating, (2) supporting patients with CKD in their home environment, and (3) addressing inpatient food services for patients with kidney disease." The Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease recently published an article exploring opportunities for improving the transplant assessment and education process in BC. Co-authored by provincial renal network members and BC Renal employees, the analysis compiled patient and health provider perspectives through anonymous surveys and evaluated the degree of pre-transplant knowledge and patient education across both demographics. Though more extensive research may be needed to better understand specific gaps in the assessment and education process (as the scope of the analysis was limited due to the number of participants), the article identified areas of improvement such as "communication with regional clinics and transplant centers... [and] opportunities to develop strategies to actively address modifiable barriers in a patient’s kidney transplantation journey."
