🧡 Akimblog Review: Lin Li Reviews James Jean: Meadowlark at CICA Vancouver 🧡 In this week’s Akimblog review, Lindsay Sorell @ writes, “Walking into James Jean's solo exhibition at CICA Vancouver, visitors are greeted by the barely legible title of the exhibition printed in silver-coloured vinyl with custom graffiti-styled typography on a pink-painted gallery wall alongside the introductory exhibition text. This title, Meadowlark, as well as the introduction, sets the tone for the richly-hued exhibition space that features Jane's most recent paintings, sculptures, and animated video. Meadowlarks are a bird breed known for their mastery of mimicking the calls of other birds. This adaptability echoes the artist's experience of migration as well as pluralism in his creative process, while the text fonts are designed to be unreadable and psychedelic, implying ‘a loss of language [and] the struggle to decipher symbols and to communicate.’” James Jean: Meadowlark is on view at CICA Vancouver until September 15, 2024. 📢 Call for Applications: ohpinamake 2024 Prize for Indigenous Artists @ University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon 📢 The University of Saskatchewan Art Galleries and Collection (USAGaC) invites Indigenous artists to apply for the third annual ohpinamake Prize for Indigenous artists. “ohpinamake” is a nêhiyawêwin term meaning ‘to lift others,’ which was gifted to USAGaC by three Indigenous community leaders: elders Maria Campbell and Louise Bernice Halfe-Sky Dancer, and artist and alumna Ruth Cuthand (BFA’83, MFA’92). This award recognizes an Indigenous artist who works within the spirit of the term, and whose territories intersect with the current colonial borders of Canada. The chosen artist must engage in a practice that ‘lifts others’. This can be understood as an active social practice or as the production of artwork that elevates Indigenous world-senses and creates community. It can also be understood as modelling behaviour that supports others in truly relational ways. Prize: $10,000 Deadline: October 15, 2024 https://ow.ly/NiLw50TkATm 📸 Image 1: Joi T. Arcand, (ᐁᑳᐏᔭ ᓀᐯᐏᓯ), 2017. Neon channel sign, 121 x 183 x 25 cm.
