La prima, nel 1814, era diretta contro Joachim Murat e l’occupazione francese del regno di Napoli. Le altre due, nel 1837 e nel 1848 e 1849, cercavano di rovesciare Ferdinando II, re delle Due Sicilie. Nessuna delle tre avevano successo, ma tutte e tre avevano un ruolo nell’eventuale declino della dinastia borbonica e il suo crollo completo così come nell’unificazione di Italia. Il costo personale dei patrioti di Penne era grande. The city of Penne was the site of three uprisings in the Nineteenth Century. The first, in 1814, ... more The city of Penne was the site of three uprisings in the Nineteenth Century. The first, in 1814, was against Joachim Murat and the French occupation of the Kingdom of Naples. The other two, in 1837 and in 1848-49, tried to overthrow Ferdinando II, king of the Two Sicilies. None of the three were successful, but all three had a role in the eventual decline of the Bourbon Dynasty and its eventual collapse as well as in the unification of Italy. The personal cost to the patriots of Penne was great. Many were condemned to long prison sentences as political prisoners, forced to be continuously chained to other inmates in miserable conditions. Others were exiled or forced to hide, far from their families, their homes, and from a normal life; eight were sentenced to death. This book recounts the story of the uprisings in more detail than told by Giovanni De Caesaris and Luigi Polacchi, using genealogical research that reveals new details and paints a more complete picture of these men in terms of family and familial relationships.
The book is divided into two parts. The first recounts the history of the three uprisings and other significant political events from 1814 to 1870. The second part contains an entry for every person identified as a patriot of Penne as well as others who interacted with them during that period. For each of the 245 persons listed there is information concerning their activities, their parents, siblings, spouses, their spouse’s family, and their children, as well as notes on their relatives who were also involved in patriotic actions.

We all know about Pompeii and Herculaneum, to the south and west of Vesuvius respectively, but it... more We all know about Pompeii and Herculaneum, to the south and west of Vesuvius respectively, but its north slope is by contrast almost a blank in the archaeological record, something which the Apolline Project set out to rectify. The reports and linked historical essays in this volume examine the evidence for settlement on the north slope, and seek to integrate this work into wider debates in Pompeiian studies. They also provide useful perspectives on the region in Late Antiquity.

This book is the first comprehensive study of the mausolea of the later Roman emperors. Construct... more This book is the first comprehensive study of the mausolea of the later Roman emperors. Constructed between ca. AD 244 and 450 and bridging the transition from paganism to Christianity within the empire, these important buildings shared a common design, that of domed rotunda. Mark Johnson examines the symbolism and function of the mausolea, demonstrating for the first time that these monuments served as temples and shrines to the divinized emperors. Through an examination of literary sources and the archaeological record, he identifies which buildings were built as imperial tombs. Each building is examined to determine its place in the development of the type as well as for its unique features within the group. Recognizing the strong relationship between the mausolea built for pagan and Christian emperors, Johnson also analyzes their important differences.

La chiesa dei Santi Apostoli a Costantinopoli, costruita da Costantino intorno al 335 d.C. e... more La chiesa dei Santi Apostoli a Costantinopoli, costruita da Costantino intorno al 335 d.C. e rifatta da Giustiniano verso il 550 d.C, era una delle più importanti chiese della tarda antichità e del periodo bizantino. Domande importanti riguardo la sua forma originale e il suo significato sono state e rimangono oggetto di discussione. La relazione propone una nuova interpretazione della chiesa originale e della sua importanza fino alla sua distruzione sotto Mehmed I intorno al 1462.
