1972 Citroen DS21 4-Speed
This 1972 Citroën DS21 sedan is a North American-market sedan that underwent a repaint and an interior re-trim in the 1980s before being put into storage in Pennsylvania. It was acquired by the selling dealer in 2022 and relocated to New York, where it underwent refurbishment work that involved adding a PerTronix ignition, overhauling the LHM accumulator sphere, rebuilding the hydraulic pump and power steering system, and more as detailed below. The car is finished in green with a contrasting green roof and features quad fixed US-specification headlights as well as tan cloth–trimmed seats. Power is supplied by a 2.2-liter inline-four mated to a four-speed manual transaxle, and further equipment includes a hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension, power-assisted brakes, and 15″ steel wheels. Now showing 84k miles, this DS21 is now offered in New York with an owner’s manual, recent service records, spare parts, a car cover, and a Pennsylvania title listing the car as a 1973 model.
The car underwent rust repair and was repainted in dark green with a contrasting green roof in the 1980s. It features quad fixed US-specification headlights, dual side mirrors, and stainless-steel bumpers.
The 15″ steel wheels wear polished covers and are mounted with Vredestein tires measuring 185/70, and a spare tire is stored under the hood in front of the engine. The hydropneumatic system serves the self-leveling, height-adjustable suspension and also provides assistance to the steering and braking systems. Stopping power is provided by brakes actuated by a floor-mounted brake “mushroom” button that proportions stopping power between the inboard-mounted front discs and rear drums. The LHM accumulator sphere was overhauled in 2022, while work in 2024 involved rebuilding the power steering system and replacing the front brake rotors and pads.
The cabin houses individual front seats and a rear bench which were reupholstered in tan cloth and the headliner, door panels, and carpets were replaced under current ownership, according to the seller. Further interior appointments include a heater, three-point front seatbelts, and roll-up windows. The radio and clock do not work.
A single-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 84k miles, approximately 3k of which have been added under current ownership. The speedometer cable was replaced in November 2022, and true mileage is unknown.
The 2.2-liter inline-four is equipped with a single two-barrel carburetor and sends power to the front wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. Work in 2022 involved rebuilding one of the motor mounts, adding a PerTronix ignition, and replacing one of the motor mounts along with the starter, distributor cap, spark plugs, and ignition wires. The hydraulic pump was rebuilt and the water pump, timing scale, and fuel sending unit were replaced in 2024. A radiator leak is noted in a 2024 record shown in the gallery.
The Pennsylvania title carries an “Out of State Vehicle” notation.
