Hot. Too hot. The back of your neck was damp, and you wondered whether your new bedding really conserved that much heat. But you were comfortable; for the first time in a while you didn’t feel groggy or reluctant to pull away the duvet and start your day… five more minutes maybe. You snuggled further into your pillow and blankets around you, but upon feeling a firm pressure squeeze your shoulders your eyes snapped open, now aware that your pillow wasn’t usually this hard, nor was it heated. There was something heavy draped around your shoulders, and this room was clearly not your own.

You swished the yellow liquid in your cup around, watching it slosh against the walls. The scent of daisies filled your nose and you had to stop yourself from having the rather morbid image in your mind of boiling the beautiful flowers alive to create the cup of liquid gold that seemed to shimmer in the light.

The light in your apartment flickered for a moment, drawing your attention away from the window that overlooks the city. You lived close enough to Stark Tower to envision a clear path there from your building, and high enough to see the Avengers symbol displayed on the outside.

Sometimes you wondered why the Avengers advertise their headquarters, where you’re certain they hold their most important technology, members and documents. You couldn’t help but think that it’s effectively painting a big, red target on the building, shouting, ‘Hey, come and get us, bad guy! We probably stole something very valuable to you recently to foil your plans, and it’s right here!’ Of course, they probably had security, but a part of you knew that even a highly trained human would be no match for the supervillains the Avengers deal with if they wanted to steal it back. There’s a reason that the Avengers are made up of superhumans.
