Since mid-2023, the West Bank has endured unprecedented violence due to persistent Israeli Security Forces (ISF) incursions. These operations, involving airstrikes, drones, and heavy machinery, have caused extensive damage to infrastructure, widespread destruction, and led to numerous arrests and the killing of Palestinian civilians. The Nur Shams camp is no exception. Many residents have lost their livelihoods, seen their homes severely damaged or destroyed, suffered critical injuries, or even lost their lives. Eyad Abu Al-Rab is one of the many civilians injured by live ammunition in this Palestinian refugee community. His recovery journey reflects the resilience of Nur Shams, which means "sunlight" in Arabic. All dogs are special, but some also have very special skills - they assist search and rescue experts in finding people trapped under rubble, ultimately saving lives. 🐕🦺 Michonne is one of these brave canine heroes. She began her journey as a 1.5-year-old pup at the Spanish School Rescue and Detection with Dogs (ESDP). Susana, her handler, quickly recognised Michonne's unique qualities: "Michonne compensates her occasional lack of concentration in stressful situations with an excellent bond and an inexhaustible desire to work," she says. Beyond their physical search and rescue abilities, dogs like Michonne play another crucial role in the aftermath of an emergency: they provide mental comfort and a healthy distraction, helping civil protection teams cope with stress. "In the same way that dogs seek support in overwhelming situations, guides rely on their dogs, especially in situations of high emotional stress when being away from our families. They become an extension of the home we long for," adds Susana. 🚒 As Madeira battles a significant wildfire that erupted on 14 August 2024 in the Serra de Água region, the EU has swiftly mobilized support for Portugal. The fire, which has already devastated over 3,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of at least 160 residents, continues to spread in the municipalities of Ribeira Brava and Câmara de Lobos. In response to Portugal's activation of the #EUCivilProtection Mechanism, the European Commission's Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) has coordinated the immediate deployment of two #rescEU firefighting Canadair planes from Spain, which arrived yesterday to assist local authorities in their efforts. These aircraft will provide crucial aerial support in the fight against the flames. Additionally, the Copernicus emergency satellite system has been activated to deliver vital mapping information to local authorities, aiding in their response strategy. The ERCC is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to deploy further assistance, as needed.
