UK Researchers - follow us on a journey to de-mystify Horizon Europe funding! 🧙♂️ 🌋 ⬇ ⭐ The Horizon Europe Programme provides #research funding opportunities for every UK applicant: ◼ from early career to senior researchers; ◼ from academic and non-academic institutions (SMEs, charities, hospitals, NGOs, government departments...); ◼ and from all disciplines. However, we are aware that, especially for applicants new to European funding, applications to Horizon Europe might be daunting at first. Hence, we will post articles on all aspects of Horizon Europe funding, from successfully applying to demystifying the different pillars, over the coming months. Today's post will provide a general overview of Horizon Europe and its "Three Pillars", so strap in! 👩🚀 🚀 ➡ What is Horizon Europe? Horizon Europe is the EU's main funding Programme for Research and Innovation activities in all research areas. It fosters excellence in research and promotes the formation of international partnerships. With a current total budget of €95.5 billion, it will run from 2021 to 2027. ➡What is the UK's relationship to this R&I programme? As the UK is associated to this Programme, UK-based researchers can apply to all calls, provided the call text doesn't state otherwise. ➡ What is the structure of Horizon Europe? This funding programme is based on a "three pillar structure", supplemented by horizontal pillars and other actions. Each pillar is a funding scheme with a specific focus and regulations. ➡ The "Main Three Pillar Structure"? ◼ Pillar 1️⃣ promotes excellent science in all research areas. Applicants can submit a proposal of their choice. There are three funding schemes with different focuses: "MSCA" (training of researchers), "ERC" (frontier research), and "Research Infrastructures" (to set up infrastructure). ◼ Pillar 2️⃣ funds research activities where the outcomes directly support EU policy priorities. All research areas are funded; however, submitted proposals must convince evaluators that the consortium composition and the chosen research methodology will successfully deliver all the objectives outlined in the call text. ◼ Pillar 3️⃣ funds high-risk innovative projects in disruptive technologies at all technology readiness levels in both open- and priority-driven calls. ➡ We will discuss the specifics of each scheme and more funding opportunities in subsequent posts. Stay tuned! 😉 ➡ SPOILER: Our next post will provide UK applicants with information on applying for Horizon Europe funding and the available support for all disciplines and sectors. ⭐ UK researchers, please share these posts within your research communities, both in the academic and non-academic sectors, and with those looking for new funding opportunities.⭐ UK Research and Innovation #grant #funding #HorizonEurope #opportunity #earlycareer #history #biology #chemistry #physics #geology #STEM #Arts #Humanities #sociology #literature #mathematics #statistics #languages

Under the 2024 ERC Synergy Grants call, 23 UK-based researchers will participate in 18 ERC Synergy Grants out of 57 winning projects. Today, the ERC announced the results of the ERC Synergy Grants 2024 call: Out of 548 proposals submitted in response to this call, 57 projects from all research disciplines will receive a total of €571 million in funding. UK institutions will host 23 researchers involved in 18 ERC Synergy Grants, second only to Germany. 👉 Full press release: https://lnkd.in/dk8jcJ78 👉List of winning projects: https://lnkd.in/d5RJ6qX4 ➡ ERC Synergy Grants - collaborative ambitious frontier research. ERC Synergy Grants fund collaborative frontier research projects between outstanding researchers from all nationalities and disciplines. Researchers are invited to submit a project of their choice to tackle today's most complex and ambitious scientific questions and expand the borders of their research area in the process. This scheme calls for projects which require excellent researchers to combine their scientific expertise, experience and resources to undertake a project so ambitious that a single research team could not resolve it on their own. ➡ ERC Grants - an opportunity for UK Researchers. This year's ERC Synergy Grant call will close soon. However, ERC calls are annual opportunities and interested researchers are strongly encouraged to start thinking about an application to the next application round early. ◾ The UK ERC experts provides detailed and free information on how to successfully apply to the Synergy Grant: https://lnkd.in/dDRB6-Wj ◾ In case of questions on the ERC schemes, the UK ERC experts can be contacted at 📩 [email protected] for free, confidential and independent advice. 🚀 Excited to announce that the European Innovation Council (EIC) will be investing €1.4 billion in breakthrough innovation across Europe in 2025 after the Commission adopted the new Work Programme today. This funding, part of Horizon Europe, targets deep tech and strategic technologies essential for Europe’s competitiveness. Key features include: ☑️ STEP Scale-up Scheme: €300 million in total for equity investment in companies driving strategic technologies, to help them secure larger private co-investment. ☑️ EIC Pathfinder: €262 million in total for early-stage, multi-disciplinary research that could lead to technology breakthroughs. €120 million of this in “EIC Challenges” funding for emerging tech (e.g., autonomous construction robots, climate-resilient crops). ☑️ EIC Accelerator: €634 million for start-ups and SMEs to commercialise and scale innovations, with investments up to €10 million. €250 million of this funding for early-stage companies in sectors such as AI and future mobility. ☑️ EIC Transition: €98 million to turn research results into innovation opportunities. ☑️ Increased access to business acceleration services for emerging companies from ‘widening countries’. Read more here 👉 europa.eu/!g9tx6q The EIC has emerged as a gamechanger in EU support to breakthrough innovation, and this new Work Programme will make it go even further. The targeted support, especially through the STEP scale-up call, will help bridge critical funding gaps and build a stronger, more resilient innovation ecosystem in Europe. #EUInnovation #HorizonEurope #DeepTech #EIC #InnovationForEurope

UK Research Office (UKRO) reposted this
Chief Scientific Advisor, UK Department of Science, Innovation and Technology, London. Professor, Queen’s University, Belfast. Non-exec Director, Health and Safety Executive
I’m already looking forward to being at @Lagan Valley Island Conference Centre next week, to talk about Horizon Europe. Because if you’re a businessperson, a researcher, a scientist, or anyone involved in R&D, and you’re not talking about Horizon already – why aren’t you? Horizon is the world’s largest programme of research collaboration – worth around £80 billion – and there are opportunities for researchers and businesses of all shapes and sizes to apply for funding for their work. Over £81 million was awarded to projects in Northern Ireland through Horizon’s predecessor, Horizon 2020, so we know the opportunities are there. And that’s before you think about the enormous value that comes from working hand-in-hand with some of the brightest minds from across Europe, as well as Canada, New Zealand and beyond. On Thursday 24th, we will bring together business leaders, academics and researchers from across Northern Ireland, to speak to those who have been through the process of bidding for Horizon funding, gain support for their applications, and to connect with likeminded innovators. There are still spaces available, and it’s not too late to register. Horizon could be the opportunity that helps get your brilliant idea out of the lab, and into the marketplace. https://lnkd.in/etfm5km7

Warmest congratulations to Prof. Baker for winning this year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry! ⭐ In addition to performing ground-breaking frontier research in his field, Prof. Baker also contributed to the training of the next generation of researchers through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) funding scheme. As a collaborator in four MSCA projects worth nearly €1 million, he hosted, trained and supervised MSCA postdoctoral fellows alongside European partners. We again congratulate Prof. Baker, and wish him many more years of successful research and fruitful collaborations. ➡ https://lnkd.in/egpsSrzG #MSCA
