Joana will be joined by Justin Arenstein, Chief Executive, Code For Africa (CfA), African network for investigative journalism and Tom Southern, Director of Special Projects, Centre for Information Resilience, UK. #FIMI #Resilience
Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference (FIMI) has become an increasingly serious challenge for today’s democratic societies, especially as over one and a half billion people have voted or are preparing to vote in 2024. This highlights the urgent need to protect democracy. The fourth edition of the London FIMI Forum, organised by the EU Delegation to the UK, directly addresses these pressing concerns. With such a significant portion of the global population participating in elections, safeguarding democratic processes from foreign interference has never been more critical. The goal of the London FIMI Forum is to foster dialogue and coordination between key EU partners, including the UK. It will delve into practical tools to the address threat FIMI poses to the democratic process and will examine how new partnerships can generate collective responses to its evolving nature. By bringing together policymakers, researchers, experts from different associations, and other like-minded partners, the forum aims to strengthen cognitive security and assess the potential for global cooperation against foreign interference. #LondonFIMIforum

📯 Last week, the #SIFMANet team visited Budapest to discuss sanctions implementation in Hungary, including at a policy roundtable organised with the Egyensúly Intézet // Equilibrium Institute of Budapest - learn more about our findings and meetings below 👇
🇭🇺 This week, the #SIFMANet team visited Budapest to discuss sanctions implementation in Hungary. From the presentation on cryptocurrencies and sanctions evasion at the informal #RELEX meeting, a lecture on how to defend democracy from malign finance at the Corvinus University of Budapest to the policy roundtable, organised with the Egyensúly Intézet // Equilibrium Institute of Budapest - it was a busy week! See our main takeaways 👇 🇪🇺Streamlining implementation: The institutional framework could be more centralised, as firms currently have to interact with several authorities. More support to interpret EU regulations would also help firms’ compliance efforts. 📯 Upping awareness-raising: Authorities share information via interest groups and deliver trainings, but more could be done to increase the sanctions expertise of industry, especially among SMEs. 🤝Customs challenges: The regional coordination agreement between the Baltic states, Poland and Finland to strengthen and harmonise customs operations has also led to a redirection of flows that Hungary now must face. 🛑 Technology and data needs: Lack of automatic tools to monitor sanctions violation risks and increased manual workload pose capacity issues both in the public and private sectors, especially in saturated customs agencies. 👉Stay tuned for our country report to learn more and sign up for the SIFMANet Sanctions Brief to stay up today with our work: https://lnkd.in/eggvH8WN Tom Keatinge | Gonzalo Saiz | Vlada Yaremenko | Balázs Gyimesi | Emil Dall | Olivia Allison

“If it turns out that the knife attack in Solingen was organised in advance and there is support and some kind of cell in the background, it means that Isis is struggling to carry out more attacks like the Crocus concert hall,” Dr Antonio Giustozzi, Senior Research Fellow – Terrorism and Conflict told Finnish public broadcaster Yle. "Without a coordinated approach at national, EU, and international level, any new anti-money laundering package risks of having limited impact. And in a Union which is only as strong as its weakest link, AML deficiencies leave countries prey to money launderers and threat actors alike, reducing the security of the EU as a whole," writes Maria Nizzero, Research Fellow, Centre for Finance and Security (CFS) at RUSI, in her latest commentary.
