Shining a light on optronics for defense and security

About us

The Research Unit for Lasers and Optronics at the Royal Military Academy (RMA) in Brussels is a research group in the field of laser and optronics technology for military applications. Led by Col. Marijke Vandewal, our team of researchers conducts research in areas such as thermal and infrared cameras, computer vision, camera and human dazzling, camouflage, high energy lasers, and more. We have several facilities including a laser tunnel, a shooting simulator, a lab for measuring camouflage performance, and a drone lab which provides drones as targets and sensor plaftorms. As part of the RMA, our research unit also provides education to future Belgian officers and offers advisory services to the Belgian military in the areas of lasers and optronics.
