Schlieren Science: Observe - Listen - Relax Last Friday, we supported the lab practicals for the students in the "Tactical Military Sensors" class (this year POL 176), which included a Schlieren setup. We designed this experiment to demonstrate how small changes in the atmospheric refractive index influence light propagation, critically limiting the performance of both lasers and imaging sensors through the atmosphere. Instead of using classical white light and a knife edge, we used a standard 5050 RGB LED with a circular aperture. This simple modification offers basic directional information through a colour change in the light rays. The video includes AI-generated inspired music that will hopefully help you relax to the colourful swirls of turbulence. RMA Laser & Optronics Royal Military Academy, Belgium #rma #Schlieren Enjoy,

About us
The Research Unit for Lasers and Optronics at the Royal Military Academy (RMA) in Brussels is a research group in the field of laser and optronics technology for military applications. Led by Col. Marijke Vandewal, our team of researchers conducts research in areas such as thermal and infrared cameras, computer vision, camera and human dazzling, camouflage, high energy lasers, and more. We have several facilities including a laser tunnel, a shooting simulator, a lab for measuring camouflage performance, and a drone lab which provides drones as targets and sensor plaftorms. As part of the RMA, our research unit also provides education to future Belgian officers and offers advisory services to the Belgian military in the areas of lasers and optronics.

'A Multispectral Camouflage Net Evaluation Capability' 👍 Congratulations to our colleagues from the LEMA lab and fellow researchers from RMA Laser & Optronics Research teams of the Royal Military Academy, Belgium 🎓 , on their recent successes. They have achieved a double, with an IEEE journal publication and an article in 'LA DEFENSE' magazine. The articles cover recent experiments and the establishment of the radar and optical/infrared signature standards research facility for camouflage netting. 1) Journal publication in IEEE Access (open access): https://lnkd.in/eFPBg4jS 2) LA DEFENSE: https://lnkd.in/eehQZNdd Well done, #rma #camouflage #BelgianDefence

🚢 Enhancing Maritime Safety with AI: A Deep Dive into Person Detection on Ships 🚢 🌐 Just released: An extended video showcasing visible and infrared imagery of maritime traffic, but there's more to it... In our latest research at the RMA Laser & Optronics, Royal Military Academy, Belgium, we are pushing the boundaries of deep learning to enhance person detection on ships. This task is challenging due to low-resolution images, cluttered backgrounds, and spectral dissimilarities. We're using visible and infrared cameras to improve models' ability to distinguish between people and vessels. Infrared data significantly enhances detector performance, but pre-trained models don't always adapt seamlessly to infrared imagery, indicating exciting new directions for future work! https://optro.rma.ac.be/ 🔬 This study paves the way for advancements in maritime security and safety, leveraging the power of AI. Stay tuned for more updates! #DeepLearning #MaritimeSafety #AI #Infrared #VisibleLight #Optronics #LaserResearch #RMA

'Will Ye No Come Back Again' - Aye, Lights out on yet another successful scientific conference for the researchers of the Royal Military Academy, Belgium. This week, we presented seven scientific talks at the SPIE Imaging + Sensors Symposium in Edinburgh, Scotland. Researchers representing three departments at RMA (RMA Laser & Optronics / CISS, Robotics & Autonomous Systems / MECA, and ABAL) delivered presentations to an international audience of their peers - excellent job guys. This also included organising, co-chairing and session chairing one of the laser conferences too. SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics - Madrid SPIE 2025 and back to Edinburgh for SPIE 2026.

Internship student update: EO/IR Signatures This week, we are providing an update on the progress of our internship engineering student, Alice Deza, from the University of Lyon, Ecole nationale des Travaux publics de l'Etat ( https://www.entpe.fr ). She is in the final weeks of a six-month research internship with our team, Laser & Optronics, Royal Military Academy, Belgium. Her tasks have encompassed three aspects of EO/IR signatures relevant to our group's research: ship signature assessment for deep learning algorithms, camouflage assessment to improve measurement standards, and the impact of laser dazzling on human performance. The attached short video gives a short overview of her activities with us. Well done Alice, Best wishes, Team Laser & Optronics, RMA #RMA #ENTPE
