Creativity is… In a recent interview with Campaign UK, Andre (Dede) Laurentino shared his view on creativity and I urge you to give it a read. It certainly got me thinking. We often talk about creativity being our superpower, but it can only be that if we have trust in the hero, or the idea, and the bravery to see where it could take us. Dede draws parallels to a plot of the story and how deus ex machina drives an unexpected outcome. As Dede says, “One capricious trait of creativity, as with deus ex machina solutions, is that it can never have been executed before. It needs to have the surprise element, or it won’t be as potent – or not potent enough to solve a tightly knotted problem. To achieve exponential results, we must be open to the illogical surprise element. The lateral way out that has never presented itself before… Believe in creativity. Or be comfortable with predictable but mediocre results.” It’s true. When I think about the most impactful work that has really left its mark on society, not only does it have creativity at its centre, it has trust and bravery as a starting point. On January 24th, we proudly announced the launch of the Creative Belgium School, an initiative by Thomas More University of Applied Sciences and Creative Belgium, spearheaded by Greet and Isabel (pictured). Both recognized the necessity and felt a strong motivation to develop a distinctive international education program. “With this one-year program, we will break barriers.” they stated. The moment has arrived. Today, 21 students embark on their journey in a classroom that is, both literally and metaphorically, a blank canvas. This initiative could not have launched without the backing of the industry. 🙏 to our founding partners VML, Publicis Groupe Belgium, Ogilvy Social.Lab Belgium, mortierbrigade, LDV United, Happiness, egghunter, Bridgeneers, Accenture Song BELUX whose belief in the importance of support has made this school possible.
