The EU's progress on corporate sustainability is under threat by an omnibus proposal that could weaken key climate & accountability laws like #CSDDD and #CSRD Meaning: ❌ More pollution and environmental harm ❌ Exploitation of people across supply chains ❌ Rewarding companies that ignore sustainability & human rights The EU must take the lead in protecting human rights, the environment and climate—not backtrack. ⚖️ Food safety, public health, social protection, workers and labour rights, animal welfare, and environmental protections are the backbone of a fair and resilient society. Not regulatory burdens as some (corporate lobbies) would have us believe. More than 270 civil society and trade union groups urge Ursula von der Leyen to uphold #RulesToProtect people, nature, and democracy🌍 Deregulating essential protections will only: ❌ Deepen inequality & insecurity among European 🏛️ Undermine citizens’ trust in public institutions 🔥 Feed into anti-democratic narratives that exploit fears for electoral gain Laws should serve society—not just cut costs for business. Actually, enforcing EU environmental laws alone could save the EU economy €55 billion annually in health and environmental costs. It’s time to prioritise public welfare over corporate interests. Laia Segura Cueto spoke with FORESIGHT Climate & Energy this week to explain why EU decision makers must pull out all the stops to provide energy-efficient housing for citizens in order to tackle energy poverty. “Without public investment and targeted support, vulnerable households will continue to bear the brunt of the cost of living crisis. [..] we can all agree that 47 million Europeans living in energy poverty is 47 million too many, and the EU has a mandate to act and must end this scandalous situation. What we are doing is really looking towards the new commissioner to build a plan and pick up the right tools to make it happen.
