Breaking News! We have an agreement on the #EUDisabilityCard! Update: the deadlines are less long than we originally understood - check the corrected article. The final text represents a significant improvement to the original proposal, although we regret the deadlines. We thank the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union for the speedy agreement. We especially thank the Parliament's lead negotiator, Lucia Ďuriš Nicholsonová, for her strong defence of the demands of the disability movement. Equality left behind. We are extremely surprised and disappointed with today's announced downgrade of the Commission portfolio of “Equality” to only be part of the portfolio of the Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management. This represents a rollback on all the achievements of the previous Commission on Equality and sets a dangerous precedent. Yannis Vardakastanis, our President of the European Disability Forum, said: "It is unbelievable that the proposal excludes a standalone portfolio on Equality. We are outraged by this “downgrade”; it is a “slap in the face” for millions of people and risks all the progress that the Commission has made so far regarding our rights. We urgently ask members of the European Parliament to take charge in restoring the position of Commissioner for Equality as a standalone portfolio." We are left shocked and outraged. https://lnkd.in/ez2eeBYc

Read the important coverage of Euronews about our efforts to improve the law on "protection of adults":
In 2023, the European Commission proposed a new law on protection of adults in cross-border situations. It has been a missed opportunity to advance disability rights in Europe, which we criticised at the European Disability Forum. Even if the proposal focuses on procedural rules, the EU should not allow and facilitate the recognition of measures that violates people's rights, such as deprivation of legal capacity or placement in institutions. We count on the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union to amend the proposed law. Thank you Euronews for the coverage! https://lnkd.in/e8ZdrZdE

Persons with disabilities often face difficulties in getting screened, diagnosed and treated for cancer. To help tackle that, the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) commissioned a survey to understand what are the challenges and how to address them. If you are a person with disabilities and ever tried to undergo cancer screening, diagnosis or care, please fill out this survey (available in all EU languages, Norwegian and Icelandic): https://lnkd.in/dx3bQ45s

Our 8th European Human Rights report launched today reveals a harsh truth: no EU country fully protects persons with disabilities from losing their right to make decisions, enabling violence and abuse. Regressive policies leave them vulnerable to physical, emotional, and sexual violence with little chance for escape or support. We urge decisive action at all policymaking levels - from the EU and the Council of Europe to EU Member States - to ensure that persons with disabilities are granted the full right to make decisions and control their lives.
