❓ Did you know that half of the world’s teenagers aged 13 to 15 have had their education disrupted by bullying and physical fights? Today is UNESCO's International Day against Violence and Bullying at School, including Cyberbullying.🚫 Faced with this major issue, many questions remain unanswered: why does bullying continue to be widespread, despite many anti-bullying measures? How exactly does bullying affect young people’s mental and physical health in the long run? ERC grantee Christina Salmivalli from Turun yliopisto - University of Turku seeks to answer the first question by using quantitative, qualitative, and DNA analyses in more than 30 Finnish primary and middle schools. In doing so, she hopes to help develop more effective anti-bullying measures. ERC grantee Matteo Giletta from Universiteit Gent is interested in the long-term effects of bullying. By combining genomics and psychology, Matteo and his team want to assess how adolescents who faced bullying biologically respond to it, suspecting that depression, anxiety or sleep disturbances could be the answers.
