Are environmental regulations and clean transport initiatives too expensive with no real benefits? The reality is quite the opposite! EPHA's latest infographic project tackles this misconception, highlighting the long-term savings in healthcare costs and the improvement of public health. 🚍💨 🚨 Did you know outdoor air pollution caused 4.2 million premature deaths in 2019? 📍 Case Study: London London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (#ULEZ) has significantly reduced harmful air pollutants, lowering nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) by 53% in central areas and preventing up to 5,900 premature deaths in 2019 alone. By improving air quality, ULEZ will save the UK £1.69 billion in health costs by 2025. Clean transport regulations deliver not only environmental benefits but also significant savings for healthcare systems. 🔗 Learn more and follow our series to discover how cities are creating a healthier future: https://lnkd.in/e8zBy4EG #Sustainability #UrbanMobility #CleanTransport #PublicHealth #AirQuality #GreenCities

In EPHA's project to debunk myths about green transport, we’re taking a closer look at the misconception that SUVs are safer than other cars. ⚠️The reality: despite their size, SUVs are more dangerous. Pedestrians hit by SUVs are twice as likely to die as those hit by standard cars, and SUV drivers are 10% more likely to crash. Moreover, SUVs consume about 15% more fuel than standard cars, contributing to higher emissions and environmental impacts. 📍 Case Study: to tackle these issues, Paris has tripled parking fees for SUVs in the city centre to discourage their use and make streets safer. Other cities, like Lyon, are following suit. Safety and sustainability go hand in hand when it comes to smarter urban transport solutions! 🔗 Keep following our series as we uncover more surprising facts about transportation and urban sustainability:https://lnkd.in/e4_pHVza #RoadSafety #SUVRisks #SustainableCities #UrbanMobility

🚨 New Policy Paper: Understanding the Public Health Impacts of Gas Cooking in Europe. We’ve just taken a major step forward in understanding the public health risks associated with gas cooking. A recent health impact assessment conducted by Universitat Jaume I provides important insights into the scale of the issue: gas stoves in European homes may be contributing to approximately 36,000 premature deaths annually, with estimated economic costs of €143 billion. This research highlights the need for attention to the link between gas cooking and indoor air pollution. Studies have consistently shown that households using gas for cooking experience indoor air pollution levels that often exceed World Health Organization standards, with elevated concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂). Children are particularly susceptible to the negative health effects of indoor air pollution, with new estimates suggesting that hundreds of thousands of children may be experiencing asthma symptoms linked to gas cooking. Our policy paper offers concrete recommendations to address this issue: 💠 Phasing out gas cooking appliances that do not meet safety standards 💠 Utilising the Social Climate Fund to support a just transition to cleaner cooking alternatives 💠 Raising public awareness about the health risks associated with gas cooking 💠 Supporting the creation of an EU framework on indoor air quality This transition is crucial not only for improving public health but also aligns with the EU's broader goals on air quality, energy transition, and fossil fuel phase-outs. This paper seeks to raise awareness about the importance of addressing the public health impacts of gas cooking and promote a cleaner, healthier future for all 🌍. Is the shift to electric vehicles bad for the economy? In our new series on green transport myths, we’re uncovering the truth behind common misconceptions. One of the biggest myths is that banning internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles will harm the auto industry and jobs. 🚗 Reality: Transitioning to electric vehicles (EVs) is opening new economic opportunities, creating jobs in manufacturing, infrastructure, and renewable energy sectors. According to the International Energy Agency, EV numbers will grow from 45 million in 2023 to 525 million by 2035—spurring innovation and reducing emissions. 📍 Case Study: Amsterdam, Netherlands. By 2025, Amsterdam will only allow zero-emission vehicles in key parts of the city. This ambitious transition is part of a broader national plan to phase out ICE vehicles and improve urban air quality. The shift to EVs isn't a threat—it's an opportunity for cleaner, more sustainable cities! Stay tuned as we continue to bust myths and showcase success stories in clean transportation! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e4_pHVza #ElectricVehicles #GreenTransport #Innovation #UrbanMobility #MythBusting

Join the Movement for #CleanCooking and Healthy Indoor Air!💨 Did you know that the air in our homes could be harming our health? Despite the longstanding recognition of our right to #HealthyIndoorAir by the World Health Organization, little has been done at the EU or national level to address the issue of indoor air pollution, especially stemming from gas cooking. Gas stoves may seem harmless, but they release harmful pollutants like nitrogen dioxide (NO2) into our homes, impacting our nervous, respiratory, and circulatory systems. Recent studies, including one by CLASP Europe and EPHA, confirm that these pollutants exceed outdoor air pollution limits set by WHO. The consequences are alarming – an estimated 700,000 children in Europe are experiencing asthma symptoms due to gas stove emissions. It's time for decisive action from decision-makers to safeguard the health of all Europeans! That's why EPHA, on behalf of the Clean Cooking for Public Health Alliance, has launched the Clean Cooking for #PublicHealth Manifesto. Proudly funded by the European Climate Foundation, this is a call to action for the health and medical community to rally behind the Clean Cooking cause, advocating for our right to clean and healthy indoor air!
