On 19 August 2024, we visited our affiliate, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU), in their office in Kyiv 🇺🇦 This significant meeting aimed at discussing the pressing issue of detained journalists and the crucial need to keep the spotlight on them. The President of the NUJU, Sergiy Tomilenko, the First secretary of the NUJU, Lina Kushch have welcomed speakers such as Nariman Celal, Crimean politician and journalist, direct eyewitness of the captivity as he spent three years in Russian captivity. Olena Tsyhypa also provided her experience of supporting her imprisoned husband, the journalist Sergiy Tsyhypa. 📰 The meeting highlighted that visibility and public advocacy are of the utmost importance to support captive journalists. We must all contribute to ensure that their fate is being shared all over Europe and beyond. 🌐 🔗If you wish to further support Ukrainian journalists, you can find on EFJ’s website the IFJ/EFJ Safety Fund for Journalists in Ukraine.

I'm excited to share that our team is finalizing the translation and voiceover for the documentary "On the Frontier." This powerful film tells the story of Vasyl Miroshnyk, a courageous journalist from Zolochiv, a frontline town in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. Vasyl embodies the indomitable spirit of Ukrainian media professionals. He is a beacon of hope for hundreds of residents in the Kharkiv region who, despite the daily threat of Russian shelling, continue to live in their homes. These people eagerly await their weekly encounters with Vasyl, who personally delivers the "Zorya" newspaper to their villages on the border with the occupying country. This documentary was produced by the information service of National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU). We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners who support Ukrainian local media during wartime - Fondation Hirondelle and @IRMI (International Institute for Regional Media and Information) - for their invaluable assistance with translation and video production. I invite you to be among the first to watch this emotional excerpt from the documentary, now voiced in English. It's a powerful reminder that journalists matter, especially in times of war. Today, 9 August 2024, marks four years since the fraudulent presidential election took place in Belarus, which intensified the crackdown on journalists, independent media and trade unions to crush free speech and political opposition. Currently, 37 journalists and media workers are behind bars, according to the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ), member of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) Their work as journalists came at very high cost: violence, arrests and censorship. Let’s stand in solidarity with all Belarusian journalists to support and amplify their call for democracy and freedom of expression. 📰🖊️
