On International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the EU calls for urgent action to protect journalists and media workers covering crises and conflicts worldwide. From Gaza to Ukraine, Lebanon, Myanmar, Sudan, and Yemen, journalists risk their lives daily to report on the realities of conflict. Their work is essential to expose human rights violations, abuses, and war crimes that would otherwise remain hidden from public view. International humanitarian law is clear: journalists and media workers are civilians and must be protected at all times. The EU is committed to work with partners around the world to realise the objectives of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists. Together, let’s stand for a world where the media is free and crimes against journalists are brought to justice. “The EU condemns any attempt to abrogate the 1967 agreement between Israel and UNRWA or to otherwise attempt to obstruct its capacity to operate its mandate.” If implemented, all UNRWA operations in the region would be stopped in the West Bank, impeding all vital UNRWA operations in Gaza by hindering the provision of health, education and social services. UNRWA's actions are essential in this territory, as it oversees 58 Palestine refugee camps in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, provides assistance to nearly 6 million Palestinian refugees and runs 706 schools which offer an education to more than 540.000 students. https://lnkd.in/drsk-raW

Growth isn’t just about size - it’s about strength. The EU aims to grow stronger together with our neighbours, fostering reforms with the rule of law at the centre. Alignment with our Common Foreign & Security Policy (CFSP) reflects shared values. Partners like North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo show full alignment, with Ukraine and Moldova making strong strides. We are not and we will not be a bystander. The #EUenlargement is crucial for our geopolitical approach and for a stable, prosperous and safe Europe, stressed HR/VP Josep Borrell presenting the 2024 Enlargement Package.

At this year’s International Literary Festival in Berlin, the EU supported six talented authors from the Western Balkans, including Lejla Kalamujić. In this video, she reflects on the role of female writers, feminism in literature, and how literature builds bridges - between the Western Balkans and the EU, and beyond. As Lejla says, literature breaks down stereotypes and opens new worlds, even for those without other means to explore them. #EuropeansInAction

At this year’s International Literary Festival in Berlin, the EU proudly supported six female authors from the Western Balkans, including renowned Albanian author Diana Çuli. In this video she highlights how, like in the rest of Europe, Albanian schools teach literature starting with Homer. “We have come to know Europe through its books and famous authors. We are creators of Europe together.” #EuropeansInAction

24 October is United Nations Day and marks the anniversary of the UN Charter's entry into force in 1945. #UNDay is an important reminder of what we can achieve through multilateral cooperation. Ahead of this UN Day, we asked our trainees why the UN matters to them. Follow us this week to hear from young people as they reflect on the UN at 79! How do you think the #UN can better involve young voices in the decision-making process? “It is important not to create parallel structures of #youth engagement, but rather meaningfully include youth in the existing structures and give them a seat at the table. Their voices should be listened to, and they need to be empowered to shape the decisions on all levels of decision-making” - Josephine Hebling, Human Rights Trainee (pictured in the UN Japanese garden) European External Action Service | European Commission | Delegation of the European Union to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva | Germany in the UN
