🤥 Disinformation is false or misleading content designed to deceive or secure economic or political gain, which may cause public harm. Misinformation is false or misleading content shared without harmful intent though the effects can be still harmful. The spread of both disinformation and misinformation can have harmful consequences, such as threatening our democracies, polarising debates, and putting the health, security and environment of EU citizens at risk. Our Head of Communications Christian Skrivervik explains the dangers of both and what the EEB is doing to help tackle them. 📬 Stay informed by subscribing to our weekly newsletter—your go-to source for the latest news and updates on EU environmental policy: https://lnkd.in/ePbXinCn

Why is 2025 a BIG year for Europe’s soils? 🪱 🎉 Soil is alive – or at least it should be. Home to more than half of our planet’s species 🦠 soil ecosystems regulate water and carbon cycles 🔄 and provide 95% of the food we eat 🥕 But today, 60-70% of soils in the EU are in poor condition, with around 1 billion tonnes of soil eroded away each year 😰 Intensive agriculture, poorly managed urban expansion, climate change, and pollution are just some of the human activities that have led to large-scale soil degradation – where healthy soils turn to dust. Why does this matter?🧐 💸 Soil degradation costs the EU between €50 - €97 billion each year. 🍽️ And puts future food security at risk, as farmers rely on soil organisms to grow healthy crops. But it is possible to reverse the degradation of EU soils! The EU Institutions are currently negotiating the first-ever EU law dedicated to addressing this crisis 🙌 If they reach an agreement on a strong legal framework in the new year - like the laws that air, water and marine environments have had for some time - then Europe can begin to protect the precious ecosystems that form the foundations for life as we know it 💚 Stay tuned in 2025 🔍 #SoilHealth #soil #SoilMonitoringLaw

𝗖𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀. It's worth taking a step back to remind ourselves who we are, what we are part of, and why we do what we do. At a time when democracy faces threats from rising authoritarianism and unchecked corporate power, civil society stands as a courageous counterforce — amplifying the voices of the voiceless and holding power to account. Civil society isn’t just a stakeholder; it’s a lifeline. Made up of hard-working people fighting for the common good, it shapes policies, protects rights, and defends the planet. It’s both a vital watchdog and a counterbalance to vested interests. The first sign of democracy’s erosion is always the shrinking of civic space. In a recent article, we explore why civil society is indispensable and why it must be defended at all costs. If this resonates with you, share it with your networks. Together, let’s amplify the message — because democracy thrives when people take a stand! 🐺❤️ We love wolves and so do 71% of Europeans! Wolves play a crucial role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. They regulate prey populations, target ill individuals, and prevent diseases from spreading - and a recent report by the European Commission revealed that the majority of Europeans are in favour of maintaining their protection status. By protecting wolves Europe will not ensure a balance in nature, but local communities will benefit from ecotourism, drawing in visitors seeking to observe thriving ecosystems and these apex predators. However, wolves and other wildlife populations are under attack, with bad actors working to water down EU legislation designed to protected them. Watch our Director for Nature, Health and Environment Faustine Bas-Defossez explain the threats these animals face and why Europe needs to learn to coexist with wildlife now more than ever.

🎄𝐋𝐞𝐭’𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐓𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐜-𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬! Toys, wrapping paper, festive treats cooked in Grandma’s old pan, walks in the snow in your trusty raincoat, and even getting glammed up for the office’s Christmas party: each of these everyday holiday items can leak dangerous chemicals, especially harmful to children. Chemicals like PFAS, bisphenols and phthalates are everywhere, putting our health and the environment at serious risk. This isn't just a seasonal issue, but a year-round threat that demands immediate attention. By allowing these chemicals to continue infiltrating our homes, we are endangering our health and the one of future generations. 🎁 This Christmas, give a gift that truly matters: add your signature to the petition to ban PFAS for a #ToxicFreeFuture🌍(and many toxic free holidays) 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞👉https://lnkd.in/esbyr2mU #BanPFAS #ToxicFreeFuture

🔔 It’s time to talk about steel—its green future and the risks of delaying action. Europe’s largest steelmaker, ArcelorMittal, recently announced an unexpected delay in its renewable-based steel projects across Spain, France, Belgium, and Germany. The reason? Economic challenges. Yet, ArcelorMittal has already secured €3 billion in public aid to transition away from coal. Instead of delivering on their pledge, they’ve shifted responsibility to the new EU Commission, demanding more public funds and fewer regulations—all while maintaining business as usual. This stalling tactic not only harms workers and communities but also jeopardises Europe’s chance to build a competitive, climate-friendly steel industry. The time for scoping is over. European industry needs decisive action to embrace renewables-based steel production. The Green Deal provides a robust framework to secure Europe’s position as a frontrunner in the global market, fostering innovation, resilience, and prosperity for all. Any pause risks losing critical momentum. With this explainer, we outline the paths to decarbonising steel in Europe. This isn’t just about cutting emissions; it’s about creating a thriving industrial ecosystem that works for workers, businesses, and communities alike. Together with forward-thinking industries and civil society, we’re calling for an EU industrial blueprint that drives real change; not deregulation. 👉 Read our vision: https://lnkd.in/eZDV-ZE7 Stéphane Séjourné, Teresa Ribera, Wopke Hoekstra, Kerstin Jorna, Maive Rute, Natuur & Milieu, ECODES (Fundación Ecología y Desarrollo), Institut Cirkulární Ekonomiky, z. ú., SteelWatch, Beyond Fossil Fuels
