🥪Did you know that we waste 131 kg of food per inhabitant in the EU annually? (Eurostat, 2021) 🍴One of the reasons for this is the misconception between the Best-Before-Date (BBD) and the Use-By-Date. 🎬This short video aims at explaining the difference and highlighting which food items are still safely consumable. 👍Subscribe to not miss out on FEBA, share and like this video to celebrate the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste. #IDAFLW #WeAreFEBA #FoodBanks #FLWDay Original video produced by nutcracker premium erklärvideo 🐿️ & Tafel Deutschland e.V.

European Food Banks Federation - FEBA reposted this
On average, each person wastes 79 kg of food annually. This is the equivalent of 1.3 meals every day for everyone in the world impacted by hunger. Ahead of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss & Waste on 29 September the UNEP Brussels team visited the Food Bank Brussels-Brabant together with FAO Liaison Office Brussels and European Food Banks Federation - FEBA. Redistributing safe surplus food to those in need through food banks is one of the solutions to stem food loss and waste and support many people suffering from hunger at the same time. I want to sincerely thank FEBA and FAO Brussels for organizing this day and the Food Bank Brussels-Brabant for giving us an insight into their very important work. Many thanks, Pierre Labouverie, to you and the team at Banque Alimentaire de Bruxelles-Brabant for all your efforts! The UNEP Food Waste Index Report 2024 provides the most accurate global estimate on food waste at retail and consumer levels. It also provides countries with guidance on improving data collection and outlines best practices for transitioning from measuring food waste to actively reducing it. 🎂On 9 September 2024 our Austrian member Die Tafel Österreich celebrated its 25th Anniversary at the Vienna City Hall. Vice-President of FEBA Lindsay Boswell CBE FCIOF as well as FEBA staff and colleagues from Food Banks all over Europe were invited to join the event. A great evening full of inspiration, conversation, and dedication to our common mission. 🥕 Network Development Coordinator Anna Friederitz at the Erntedankfestival, a large agricultural fair in the heart of Vienna, visited Die Tafel Österreich at their stand. Recovering and redistributing surplus produce from farmers has a hugely sustainable impact! 📊Next on the agenda was a meeting in the framework of FEBA’s Data Collection & Digital Transformation project. 30 participants discussed the relevance of accurate datasets for ESG reporting and environmental and social impact assessment. They further focused on virtual food banking - an innovative approach to get ready for the future! 🦺 Last on the agenda was visit to the Sensory Lab and Warehouse.

From 9 to 12 September, FEBA participated in the The Global FoodBanking Network Summit 2024 in Sydney, Australia. 🌏 As always, the summit was an incredible opportunity to connect with #FoodBankers, leaders, and experts from around the world, offering fresh inspiration to continue driving change towards a more sustainable and resilient #FoodSystem. 🌾 By redistributing food that would otherwise go to waste, we have the chance not only to combat hunger but also to mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis. 🤝 Together, we are addressing the dual challenges of #FoodSecurity and #ClimateChange. In the photos, FEBA CEO Esteban Arriaga Miranda is pictured alongside FEBA President Bernard Valluis and Chris Rebstock, Field Services Director at GFN. #GFNSummit2024

Last week, our CEO Esteban Arriaga Miranda was warmly welcomed in Spain, where he visited Federación Española de Bancos de Alimentos (FESBAL) and Fundación Banco de Alimentos de Madrid. 🦺 The visit was an excellent opportunity to learn more about the 54 associated #FoodBanks throughout Spain and the challenges they face. 🤝 We are proud to work with you to reduce #FoodInsecurity and prevent #FoodWaste!

📌In January 2024, Jacques Vandenschrik was nominated ad personam by the European Commission to join the Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU #Agriculture. This was unique in bringing together diverse voices in the agri-food sector, who engaged in meaningful discussions and embraced a shared purpose. 🦺As FEBA we call on all stakeholders to enable #FoodBanks and other non-profit organisations to maximize their role and to propose measures to safeguard food affordability for lower income consumer segments through social and fiscal policies. 🚚 Those policies could include financial support targeted specifically at lower-income households. Beyond that the removal of VAT on food donations is essential in encouraging donations to Food Banks and other social organisations, distributing food for free to their beneficiaries. 🤝Beyond this we also recognize the opportunities for Food Banks and non-profit as well as social organisations distributing food for free to people in need in becoming an integral part in the transition of the food system, creating a more united and meaningful Europe. Welcome to the team Mariana Luísa Santos! Mariana Santos has an educational background in Strategic Communications and Management of Cultural and Creative Industries. In Portugal, she worked mostly in the Cultural field, for theatres, festivals, and independent artists and collectives. In 2021, in Brussels, she dived into the EU Bubble. After a traineeship at the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, she worked for INESC Brussels HUB, the European representation of the largest Research & Technology institute in Portugal. In her childhood and teenage years, as a scout, she volunteered regularly for the Portuguese Food Bank. Being a frequent spectator (and sometimes player) of performative arts, she loves to understand what connects people and create the ideal moments for sharing and building communities. While enthusiastic about discovering the Belgian life and culture, a simple grilled seabass (Portuguese style) tastes like happiness to her. #WeAreFEBA
