🌍🌡️ 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲? The greenhouse gas methane (CH4) reaches the atmosphere in two different ways: as fossil and biogenic methane. 1⃣ 𝗙𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗹 𝗖𝗛𝟰 Has been stored in the Earth’s crust for a long time and forms part of the 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲. This cycle is about fossil fuels, like oil, natural gas and charcoal. However, organic matter in the soil also plays a part in it. Strictly speaking, these fuels all come from plant materials, but from a long time ago, sometimes millions of years back. The C of CO2 originates from deep in the crust and is now a contribution to the atmosphere. 2⃣ 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗛𝟰 The cycle in which CO2 from the air is converted into plants and then back into CO2 through food for humans and animals is called the 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲. CH4 from agriculture is part of this cycle. It is created when organic matter decomposes in anaerobic conditions. This occurs in cows’ rumen and in slurry storage. The C originates from plant material and before that, from the atmosphere. So, when biogenic methane is degraded to, amongst others, CO2, the circle is closed. That CO2 is not considered as a contribution to the atmosphere. From a chemical point of view, there is no difference between both types. Methane is a strong greenhouse gas and thus contributes to global warming. The difference only refers to the question whether the CO2 after degradation of methane should be considered as a contribution to the atmosphere. 💾 This information is part of 10 Q&A's about methane that our experts Theun Vellinga and Karin Groenestein put together.

The feared effect of #biodiesel #dumping from #China is there: Investments are being postponed. Construction halted. Capacity is dialed down. Workers are furloughed. We cannot allow for #biofuel demand to be met by #unfair and possibly #fraudulent imports; now and in the future. 🗞 Read our press release on https://lnkd.in/eRdSpx_m
