🌐 The Road Ahead for the EDPS: Addressing Current and Future Challenges in Personal Data Protection 🌐 It was an honour to speak at the recent Bitkom conference #pco24 https://lnkd.in/e3P7g5Ab. As the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), we continue to address emerging complexities, ensuring that #privacy remains at the forefront of the digital landscape. Key takeaways: 🔐 Generative AI & Data Protection: We've published guidance on how public authorities can responsibly adopt #AI technologies while respecting #DataProtection principles. 👥 Transparency in Complaints Handling: We aim to strength trust by increasing visibility in how data protection complaints are processed and resolved. ⚖️ EC/Microsoft 365 Investigation: Our recent decision against the European Commission regarding its use of Microsoft 365 has raised important questions about practical compliance with data protection rules. We are now defending our decision in ongoing legal actions. 🌍 EU-US Data Transfers: We’re working with the EDPB, the European Commission and the US Department of Commerce to clarify the definitions and protections around HR data transfers under the #EUUSDataPrivacy Framework. 📊 The AI Act & Data Protection: The EDPS now oversees compliance with the #AIAct for EU institutions. We’re working to ensure that AI developments don't dilute fundamental privacy rights. As we continue to navigate these complex issues, the EDPS remains committed to ensuring robust data protection for individuals and public administrations alike. #DataProtection #PrivacyMatters #AIRegulation #EDPS #GDPR #ArtificialIntelligence #DigitalTransformation

*** Brussels Privacy Symposium 2024 *** EDPS Wojciech Wiewiorowski took part in a conversation with Gloria González Fuster at the 8th edition of the Brussels Privacy Symposium. He stressed that human dimension must be at the heart of our thinking about AI. ”We should not forget the main objective of digital regulations such as the AI Act: it is not only boosting innovation and ensuring the free movement of AI-based good and services, but also promote a human centric and trustworthy AI protecting the fundamental rights” - stated the Supervisor. "As EDPS, I recommended a cautionary approach on the deployment of certain AI systems as I continue to have serious concerns as to the necessity and proportionality of the deployment of remote biometric identification systems, such as facial recognition in public spaces in Europe". His remarks also highlighted the critical role of fundamental rights risks assessment. “Fundamental rights risks assessment is not new to data protection. However, all these assessments must not become a pure box-ticking exercises”. Brussels Privacy Hub, Future of Privacy Forum
