It accounts for almost 80% of all energy used by households, which in turn, are responsible for 21% of the EU's greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change, energy insecurity and deteriorated air quality. Local authorities have the potential to detoxify their heating and cooling systems and can make a big difference for cleaner air, a stronger economy and more resilient communities. Today marks #WorldCitiesDay ! 🏙️ Let's take this opportunity to celebrate cities and towns driving the green transition. 🌱🌎 Did you know that across the EU 🇪🇺 there are 11.967 municipalities committed to delivering climate action to reduce emissions, increase resilience, and tackle energy poverty? The Covenant of Mayors helps municipalities plan beyond mitigation, focusing as well on building resilience, through adaptation and energy poverty measures. 💪 Cities and towns are on the front line of the climate crisis. In the last couple of months, extreme weather events in Central and Eastern Europe, and more recently in Spain, have shown that we need to build resilience in cities and towns, so that they are equipped to face these challenges. This is why we are joining the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy (GCoM) in saying loud and clear that #CitiesAreCentral ! 🏘️ Effective climate action is impossible without cities and towns. Change starts locally but resonates globally. #CitiesAreTheFuture so time to #WorkWithCities 🏙️

The Covenant of Mayors Office extends deepest sympathy to and solidarity with the victims, their families and the people and communities affected by one of the worst natural disasters in Spain's recent history. Many of the towns impacted by the flooding are Covenant of Mayors signatories, and our thoughts are with them during this challenging time.

🏆 The EU Covenant of Mayors Award 2025 is now open for applications! We invite all Covenant cities with projects on decarbonising heating and cooling to apply and showcase their efforts for cleaner air, a stronger economy and resilient communities.
