On 30th October, Ceemet members gathered for the 44th General Assembly in Brussels. During the meeting, they discussed artificial intelligence, a crucial topic for the MET industries. The discussion was enriched by the presentation of Dragos Adascalitei (Researcher at @Eurofund), on #AI and Algorithmic Management: How It’s Reshaping the Workplace which gave rise a constructive and vivid debate and opened the way for future cooperation. Members also welcomed Therese de Liedekerke from BusinessEurope for an exchange on the current political and social situation and what is at stake from the employers’ perspectives. This General Assembly also marked an important shift in Ceemet’s leadership with the election of José Miguel Guerrero from the Spanish member of Ceemet, CONFEMETAL to succeed Rainer Ludwig as President. But members were also happy to elect Rainer Ludwig as Vice-President, a good way to ensure continuity for the organisation. The General Assembly also thanked Nancy Pallares M.A. for her great contribution as VP throughout her two mandates and welcomed another representative from Make UK, Rosa Wilkinson, to second the President at the head of Ceemet. #Ceemet #GeneralAssembly #Leadership #AI #employers

Today, Ceemet participated in an insightful discussion on AI and its implications for the future of work organised by CEPS (Centre for European Policy Studies) in the frame of GPAI project. Our exchange focused on three critical areas: 👉 Perception of GenAI in #Europe: We explored how generative AI is perceived across Europe—whether as a threat or an opportunity—and examined its prominence on the policy agenda. 👉 Understanding GenAI's Potential: European policymakers and stakeholders are making efforts to assess both the opportunities and potential threats of generative #AI, aiming for a balanced approach to its integration into the workforce. 👉 GenAI Policies in Europe: We discussed the focus of current and proposed policies on generative AI, examining how they aim to harness AI's potential while addressing challenges. We are committed to staying at the forefront of these developments to ensure that the interests and perspectives of Europe's metal, engineering, and technology-based industries are well-represented.

Ahead of the 4th meeting of the European Labour Authority Forum on the posting of workers to be held on 22 October 2024, Ceemet co-signed with BusinessEurope, ECEG - European Chemical Employers Group, FIEC EU and World Employment Confederation a statement on the Report on the application and implementation of the Posting Directive. The employers’ associations want to reiterate their support for the work of the ELA and highlight : • the need to continue monitoring the implementation of the Posting of Workers Directive, • the need to put in place a practical tool to support companies in determining the remuneration applicable to posted workers with all its mandatory elements (the so-called remuneration calculator”), • the necessity to improve the information available on the terms and conditions of employment for posted workers. and • their support for the initiative on e-Declaration as a universal tool to be used on a voluntary basis by the Member States. #ELA #posting of workers #labour mobility #competitiveness https://lnkd.in/ej74v3K6

💼 Rising Labor Costs in EU Manufacturing 💼 Since 2017, labor costs in EU manufacturing have been on a steady upward trend. 📈 Notably, in the Eurozone, the manufacturing sector continues to offer higher hourly wages compared to many other industries. This highlights the sector's importance in driving economic growth and providing competitive pay for skilled workers. #Manufacturing #LaborCosts #Eurozone #Wages #IndustryTrends #EU #EconomicGrowth Find all the key MET Industries data on the Chief Economists Report 2024 at www.Ceemet.org

Despite a relatively sharp drop in 2020 due to the #COVID-19 pandemic, the level of investment in tangible goods in the MET industries has risen slowly and steadily since 2010. Measures to increase and stimulate investment in Europe are still needed, as the Draghi report also noted. #Competitivness #Investment #BetterEU => Full MET key data on www.Ceemet.org

Very interesting exchange of ideas with the partners of the SkiLMeeT project on how to tackle skills & labour shortages. No one-size-fit all approach but rather a wide range of solutions for this crucial challenge for our member companies.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the SkiLMeeT roundtable "Skills and Labour Shortages in Europe” last week. We had a great discussion on the pressing challenges of today’s labour markets, which will help us fine-tune our research so it can better serve policymakers in addressing skills gaps and mismatches. Our experts shared many thought-provoking insights with us. Here are our key takeaways: 🔹 Europe faces deepening labour shortages due to an ageing population and declining workforce 🔹 Green and technological changes are fuelling skills shortages and we need precise data on their scale as well as tools that will help us predict skills needs. Hence, we need to strengthen our efforts in improving data, and collaborate on initiatives that help us gather more of it 🔹 Migration is not the only solution to labour shortages. Active market policies are needed to activate people who remain outside the labour market 🔹 There is significant potential for emerging technologies, particularly AI, to alleviate labour shortages and improve job quality. However, immediate investments in digital skills are necessary to fully leverage this potential 🔹 Long-term retention of skilled workers is essential. This requires the implementation of active labour market policies and improvements in working conditions 🙏 Many thanks to European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) for hosting us, to Vassil Kirov for organising the meeting and moderating it, to Mina Kostova for helping out, to Annachiara T. and Simone Rosini for showing the EU initiatives, Piotr Lewandowski (IBS - Institute for Structural Research) and Christina Gathmann (Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER)) for bringing up recent research and to representatives of sectoral organisations for sharing with us the biggest challenges they face: Eleonora Isopo (ECEG - European Chemical Employers Group), Delphine Rudelli (Ceemet - European Tech & Industry Employers), Léna Guyon (FIEC EU ), Manuela Kropp (European Transport Workers' Federation), Monia El faziki (SEA Europe), Monika Hoang The (European Federation of Education Employers), François Sougnez (The European Confederation of Woodworking Industries), Sebastien Leclef (UNI Europa). Until next time! 🚀
