The European Union’s strategy for defence adds two new fundamental elements 👇 🗓️ Today, the College of Commissioners adopted the long-anticipated European Defence Industry Strategy (#EDIS) and European Defence Investment Plan (#EDIP). Consistently supported by President Ursula von der Leyen and Commissioner Thierry Breton, these initiatives represent a significant shift towards a long-term vision for the EU defence industry. 🌐 What stands out? Readiness, responsiveness and resilience are the keywords when it comes to building an EU defence industry fit for the challenges of tomorrow. But not only: from the relation with NATO to the support to #Ukraine, from public funding to private investments, the adopted document offers essential insights into the Commission's ambitions for the defence sector. The strategy is centred around 5 pillars: ➡️ Planning & programming: proposing a structured approach to programming and procurement to streamline the existing frameworks. ➡️ Joint Procurement: Broadening #EDIRPA and introducing the new #EDIP, covering costs for collaboration beyond EDIRPA's current scope. ➡️ Standardisation: Acknowledging the challenges of interoperability among defence systems. ➡️ European Armament Programme framework: Proposing a new legal instrument to enhance Member States' commitment throughout the defence system's life cycle. ➡️ European Military Sales: A mechanism to reduce dependencies on third countries, promoting a "European Military Sales" system for increased awareness and availability of defence products. In terms of financing, #EDIP is set to mobilise €1.5 billion of the EU budget over the period 2025-2027.
