Apatride Network participated on September 16-18 in the 5th Conference of the Netzwerk Fluchtforschung e.V. - German Network for Forced Migration Studies in Bonn. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the organizers for their exceptional work in creating an environment conducive to dialogue and learning and we are eager to share our reflections on the experience with our network. We are incredibly thankful for the chance to present our roundtable discussion on "#Statelessness - Bringing Transdisciplinary Perspectives to the Table." During this panel, we delved into the complex issue of statelessness and highlighted our work. Throughout the roundtable, our network members and associates shared valuable insights based on their personal experiences and professional expertise. As the only roundtable explicitly addressing statelessness at the conference, we recognized the significant work that remains to be done to raise awareness about statelessness. However, we were fortunate to have had an excellent audience that was highly engaged and interested in our work and the topic. Their enthusiasm demonstrated that when academics, professionals, and advocates become aware of this issue, they recognize its severity and the importance of addressing it. Furthermore, we had the chance to connect with other research and civil society networks, as well as individuals dedicated to addressing issues that intersect with statelessness, such as #ForcedMigration. We are committed to enhancing our efforts to ensure that statelessness receives the attention it deserves. Thank you once again to everyone involved for a fruitful and inspiring event!

Millions of people around the world are denied the right to a nationality due to circumstances outside their control. Forced to live invisible lives and deprived of their rights. But everyone has the right to a nationality. Everyone has the right to say #IBelong.

🎉 We are delighted to announce a landmark achievement for #stateless individuals: you can now apply for jobs at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency! This milestone represents a significant step towards greater equality of opportunity for the stateless community worldwide. The journey began in October 2017, when the Founder of Apatride Network, Aleksejs Ivashuk, met with Jan Thomas Hiemstra, then UNDP’s Country Director in Ukraine, and raised the issue of how stateless individuals, like himself, were unable to apply for United Nations jobs due to the absence of a "stateless" option in the nationality dropdown menu. This complex issue remained unresolved for several years. After founding Apatride Network, Aleksejs continued to advocate for change, highlighting good practices in the banking and airline industries, where stateless persons had appropriate options available. After years of persistence, UNHCR resolved the issue in August 2024, ensuring stateless individuals are no longer excluded from applying for jobs. While this is an important step, other UN agencies and international organizations must follow to ensure equal job opportunities for all. 🗣 Please support us in spreading the word, especially so that stateless individuals are aware of their new right to apply for UNHCR positions.

Check out this article by our Project Manager, Jessica Schmieder, on the 'Kafkaesque' challenges that bureaucratic practices create for persons with lived experience of #statelessness, and the crucial role of stateless-led organisations in overcoming these obstacles. Special thanks to The Critical Statelessness Studies (CSS) Project and the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness for the opportunity to contribute to your monthly blog.
The Critical Statelessness Studies (CSS) Project Blog for August is out now! Jessica Schmieder, Project Manager of Apatride Network, sheds light on the 'Kafkaesque' challenges that bureaucratic practices pose for those affected by #statelessness, often leading to their marginalisation and exclusion from essential services. She also underscores the pivotal role of #stateless-led organisations in recognising these barriers and actively working to overcome them. https://lnkd.in/gbFry6Z4 This project by the Peter McMullin Centre at the Melbourne Law School provides a platform for the publication and dissemination of resources and blogs that interrogate dominant narratives and approaches in the contemporary study of statelessness. A big thanks to Thomas McGee and Sumedha Choudhury for leading and curating the monthly blogs.

📻 Last week, Radio Dreyeckland (RDL) interviewed two Apatride Network members for "VielFalter", a broadcast series on #MentalHealth, #HumanRights and structural violence in society and institutions. The conversation, in German and English, reflected on Apatride Network's work, #statelessness in Germany and Europe and the importance of including persons with lived experience of statelessness in designing and implementing initiatives to better understand and resolve the issue. 👂 Listen to the episode here: https://lnkd.in/dr9Mh9QE
