  • 👋 Have you had a chance to go through our yearly analysis of the EU seafood trade yet? 👉https://lnkd.in/djcu3QAg What you knew as Finfish Study has expanded to include a growing number of species beyond wild whitefish. New categories, such as plaice, salmon, shrimp and tuna have been introduced, reflecting the diversity / complexity of the seafood market. 👊 We have rebranded the Study as the EU SEAFOOD SUPPLY SYNOPSIS. Edition 2024 key findings: 👉 High Dependency on Imports: In 2023, the EU’s total seafood supply reached 12,473 ‎thousand tonnes, with imports accounting for 68.7% of the total supply. This underlines ‎the importance of a robust global supply chain to meet consumer demand for diverse ‎fish species.‎ 👉 Public Health Benefits: Regular seafood consumption is linked to numerous health ‎benefits, including a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases and improved cognitive ‎function. These benefits are particularly relevant in the context of the EU’s protein ‎transition, which emphasizes the replacement of less sustainable protein sources with ‎healthier, plant-based, and seafood options.‎ 👉 Supporting Economic Growth: The reliance on imports fosters job creation and economic ‎growth within the EU’s fish processing sector. By securing a consistent supply of diverse ‎seafood, the industry can innovate and adapt to evolving consumer preferences.‎ To support the industry’s growth, we urge policymakers to:‎ 👉 Enhance Trade Agreements: Facilitate seamless trade flows with third countries to ensure ‎a consistent seafood supply and minimize barriers that could hinder imports.‎ 👉 Boost EU production, fisheries and aquaculture: Increase support for sustainable practices and technological innovation in EU fisheries and aquaculture to enhance local production and foster more resilient domestic supply chains. 👉 Promote Public Awareness: Raise awareness about the health benefits of seafood ‎consumption as part of a balanced diet, encouraging consumers to choose fish as a ‎primary protein source.‎ 👉 Support Seafood Consumption: Integrate seafood more deeply into European diets. This is ‎not only a matter of health but also of economic and environmental sustainability. 📢 The European ‎Commission should recognize seafood’s essential role in the protein transition and public health ‎strategy.

AIPCE CEP’s 65th General Assembly just took place—two inspiring days in the beautiful ‎#port of sunny #Hamburg! ‎ 🐠A big thank you to Stefan Meyer and German Association of Fish Processing and Wholesale for hosting this year’s assembly in such an ‎engaging setting and for the effort you and your team put into organizing the super side events.‎ 🌍 With the new Commission taking office in an as-dynamic-as-ever global landscape, the ‎timing was perfect to strategize on the challenges that lie ahead of this sector:‎ sustainably sourced & processed seafood is key to future food security and healthy ‎nutrition, and it plays a vital role in driving a low-carbon economy; we must remain ‎resilient enough to meet our responsibilities in this regard. ‎ With Guus Pastoor & Yobana Bermúdez Rodríguez leading the charge in this ‎mandate, I’m excited about the work we’ll do in the coming months! ‎ We also celebrated the retirement of our legend, Matthias, giving him (hopefully) the ‎well-deserved send-off into a fun new chapter of life. ‎ Thank you, Stefan Meyer! Thank you, #Hamburg! Our next stop is Paris! • #SOFIA report 2024: The Importance of Sustainable Fish Processing The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2024 has recently been published, providing the most up-to-date and evidence-based information on the fishing and fish processing sectors. Here are some points: 🌊 Preserving Marine Ecosystems: Overfishing and unsustainable practices have severely impacted marine biodiversity. Implementing sustainable fish processing methods helps maintain the balance of marine ecosystems and ensures that fish populations remain healthy. This supports biodiversity and secures the livelihoods of millions who depend on fishing. ♻️ Reducing Environmental Impact: Sustainable fish processing reduces waste and minimizes the carbon footprint associated with fish production. By adopting sustainable technologies and practices, we can significantly decrease pollution and habitat destruction, making our industry more resilient against climate change. 🌐 Supporting Global Food Security: With the global demand for seafood rising, sustainable fish processing is crucial for maintaining long-term food security. By ensuring that fish stocks are harvested and processed responsibly, we can provide a reliable source of nutrition for future generations while supporting the economic stability of coastal communities worldwide. • Today is #WorldTunaDay!🐟🐟 Let's celebrate the importance of sustainable tuna fisheries and processing! #sustainablefishing

🐟  Do you know where your favourite #fish is imported from? 🍽 #Tuna is an incredibly versatile fish that adapts well to various cooking methods. Whether grilled, seared, or canned, its firm texture and rich flavor make it a favorite in kitchens worldwide. ️🌍 In 2022, the EU landed 59,000 tonnes of #quotatuna while the total tuna landings by EU vessels exceeded a whopping 500,000 tonnes. Spain leads the way as the first producer, trailed by France and Italy. However, most of this bounty is landed outside the EU, especially in Western Africa and the Indian Ocean.  🌐 The latest #EUMOFA report reveals that tuna loins play a crucial role in preserving the EU canning industry's competitiveness and activity. Relocation of production facilities outside the EU is a serious threat without this raw material. 📦 A specific #ATQ of 35,000 tonnes for tuna loins is quickly depleted within days of opening. Despite its rapid exhaustion, this quota actually constitutes only a minor portion of the overall tuna trade.  🚢 Navigate the waters of the industry by following this weekly campaign 👇 and have a look at the #Finfish study 2023 👉 https://lnkd.in/eJNa7jrc
