“Can you help anybody from your place by simply giving directions?” We visited the Burichang sub-district in Cumilla district, southern Bangladesh a few days ago. The floodwaters had merged the roads, canals and fields into one vast expanse of water in the area. As we came near our site of work, I saw people gathering on the road. I assumed they were waiting for emergency relief. A bit later, I noticed that whenever a relief truck approached, these people would move to the sides of the road and give directions to the truck drivers so that they could avoid slopes that would make the trucks skid. As I was walking ahead, I saw a woman in a burqa (Islamic veil) standing waist-deep in water. Neither the scorching heat nor the floodwaters could deter her. She was calling out to a truck driver, ‘Brother! There's a pothole exactly where you’re standing. You need to move away from it!’ At 11AM in the morning, as one of the trucks was passing by, it came close to a pothole and tilted slightly. Fearing the truck might overturn, everyone moved back. One brave soul, the woman I saw in a burqa, stayed put. She was calmly giving instructions, ‘Move slowly, just a little more...now pull straight ahead!’ When I returned to that site around 3PM in the afternoon, the people were still there, standing firm. The water hadn't receded, nor did the people retreat. In times of crisis, it’s only natural for everyone to come together and support each other, no matter the circumstance.” - Kazuki Kunimoto, BRAC BRAC’s teams are on the ground, supporting people affected by the worst flooding Bangladesh has seen in three decades. “The only thing that kept me going was thinking while I was helping others, someone must have been out there protecting my family. When the flood hit my workplace in Chittagong, I was on the ground evacuating people. At that time, my family home - 141 km away in Cumilla - was also being inundated. I kept thinking about my mother who was ill. As an area manager, my responsibility is to oversee the work and ensure the safety of my staff members. When the flood hit our office, I found myself doing everything I could — from securing important documents to ensuring the safety of our community members. My team and I also evacuated people stranded in the area. We turned our office into a shelter - where many families seeked refuge - and arranged for their food. We waded through chest-deep water to check on our community members. Many of them hadn’t eaten. We returned to our office and started preparing for emergency aid. Within the next five days, my team managed to distribute 2,100 emergency relief packets containing rice, lentils, potatoes, drinking water, saline, soap, and sanitary napkins, along with dry food. Having worked with BRAC for so many years, practising its values has now turned into a habit. It feels gratifying to be able to help those who need it the most, and I would do it all over again.” - Md Imam Hossain, BRAC staff member, Chittagong, southern Bangladesh. #NotJustAnyJob Stand with us as we stand beside Bangladesh. Trigger Warning: Sensitive Content "On 19 July, me and my friends were on the street when we suddenly heard gunshots. Everyone around us began running in different directions to escape. I, too, started running. After a while, I felt an excruciating pain below my knee, as if something had pierced me. Unable to stand, I sat down and saw blood gushing from my leg. With the help of a friend, I went to a private hospital in Badda, but the bleeding wouldn't stop.” - Md. Rifat Howlader “At the hospital, I told my friends not to inform my family that I had been shot. After that, I lost consciousness. Three days later, they had to amputate my leg. Though my headaches have waned, I still wonder: I used to be a striker on my school’s football team, and football was my passion. Will I ever be able to play again?” he asked. Many people, like Rifat, have lost their limbs during the student protests in Bangladesh. The BRAC Limb and Brace Centre is supporting them with prosthetics free of cost.
