With the ever-increasing Internet penetration rates in Turkey, different types of information dis... more With the ever-increasing Internet penetration rates in Turkey, different types of information disorder which spread through social media started to shape public and political agenda as never seen before. The number of false news stories generated with the intention of spreading either disinformation or “malinformation” (targeting reputation of political candidates) typically increase dramatically during election campaign periods. As such, before the 2018 presidential elections in Turkey, in which Tayyip Erdoğan won by getting nearly 53% of the votes and got new executive powers, a heated debate between the two opposing camps of the election campaign not only spread to the digital platforms, but also the false news in digital platforms were used in di erent proportions in the polit- ical campaigns. e Turkish news veri cation initiative teyit.org had detected 29 major di erent false news claims in circulation across the social media in the two-month period before the elections. However, among 136 social media accounts, which circulate these claims that reach hundreds of thousands of people, not all are anonymous or a “troll” social media accounts. In fact, considerable percentage of those accounts belong to well-known news outlets, which take viral social media content as a news source without verifying. In this chapter, the aim is to demonstrate the spread of information disorder in an election period through internet news sites by analyzing the raw data gathered by teyit.org. Emphasis will also be given to the “correction” or removal rates of false news from these sites a er verification proves them false in order to understand the spillover effect and the “survival” rate of disinformation against truth.

Since the case study is based on an upper-middle class suburban gated community, first, suburbanisation أas a wave of urbanisationؤ is analysed. Then, the debates about the middle class and the transformation that this social stratum has undergone are discussed. Later, the formation of gated communities around the world and in Turkey are analysed within the general framework of the transformation of the urban sphere. Finally, the theoretical arguments are scrutinised by incorporating the findings of the case study carried out in Angora Houses. Yakın dönemdeki savaşlarda artan kullanımlarıyla dikkat çeken insansız hava araçları, yüksek kali... more Yakın dönemdeki savaşlarda artan kullanımlarıyla dikkat çeken insansız hava araçları, yüksek kaliteli görüntüler aktarabilmekte ve bunlar çatışan tarafların propaganda faaliyetlerinde de kullanılmaktadır. Bu makalede, 2020’de 44 gün boyunca süren İkinci Karabağ Savaşı’nda Azerbaycan’ın (silahlı) insansız hava araçları (S/İHA) görüntülerini, Savunma Bakanlığı’nın sosyal medya hesapları üzerinden medyaya sunması ve Türkiye’deki medya kuruluşlarının bu görüntüleri değerlendirme yaklaşımları incelenmiştir. Bu süreçte, Bakanlığın Facebook ve YouTube sayfalarına yüklenen savaşla ilgili videoların %45’inin İHA kaynaklı olduğu saptanmıştır. Uluslararası medyanın da yoğun şekilde değindiği bu videolar sadece internet ortamında yaygınlaşmamış, aynı zamanda, genellikle editöryal süzgeçten geçirilmeden ham şekilde Türkiye’deki medya kuruluşları tarafından da kullanılmışlardır. Savaş alanından gelen bu görüntülerin artan kullanımı, barış gazeteciliği perspektifinden yeni soruları da gündeme getirmektedir. Bu çalışmada, savaş meydanına sınırsız erişim ve görsel kanıt olanağı sunması nedeniyle öne çıkarılan insansız hava aracı görüntülerinin içkin şekilde savaş odaklı olduğu savunulmaktadır. Ordunun servis ettiği halde, ham biçimde kullanıldığında seçkin ve propaganda odaklı olan bu görüntüler, izleyiciyi kapalı bir zaman ve mekâna hapsetmekte, dünyayı “biz” ve “onlar” arasında bölerek, “onların” hedef olarak algılanmasını pekiştirmektedir.
Drones, with their ever-increasing use in recent warfare, are capable of transmitting high-quality images, which might then be exploited for propaganda purposes by the opposing forces in a war. In this article, the release of drone footages by the Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan during the 44-day war in Karabakh against the Armenian forces in 2020 is analyzed, and the Turkish media’s approach to this matter is evaluated. It was observed that 45% of the videos uploaded to the Ministry’s Facebook and YouTube accounts were taken by drones. These videos frequently mentioned by the international media not only circulated on the internet but also were used by the Turkish media, often without being edited. The increasing use of such footages from battlefields also poses new questions in terms of peace journalism. This paper claims that drone footages that are promoted to provide visual journalistic evidence and unlimited access to battlefields have intrinsic war-oriented characteristics. When used as directly shared by the military, such raw footages serve an elite and propaganda-oriented attitude and shut the viewer into a closed space and time, dividing the world into “us” and “them” while contributing to the perception of “them” being the target.
What happens to journalists when hit by a pandemic in a country governed by authoritarian media r... more What happens to journalists when hit by a pandemic in a country governed by authoritarian media regulations? We examine journalists’ experience in Turkey’s mainstream and alternative media and find that while the pandemic has deepened their economic precarity, journalists further suffer from bodily and political precarity. In the context of Covid, the body emerges as a site on which precarity with multiple dimensions (economic anxiety, illness, and state violence) is inscribed. Under the conditions of what we deem political precarity, most journalists cannot speak truth to power as the pandemic is politically instrumentalized. This retheorizing of precarity dewesternizes the term by connecting it to state-induced forms of violence relying on relations of political recognition and value ascription. We urge journalism and media labor studies to refrain from Eurocentricism and technological determinism that center the standard employment model and the disruptive cultures of technology at the expense of body and politics.
In Turkey, the widespread sharing of false information about refugees on social media is one of t... more In Turkey, the widespread sharing of false information about refugees on social media is one of the main reasons behind the ever-increasing antirefugee sentiment. In this study, with a reference to critical discourse studies and by adopting a theoretical approach on indirect violence, 1,000 user comments made under the most viral false claims on Facebook about Syrian refugees during the election years of 2018–19 were analyzed. Together with comments that are classified under categories of hate speech and discriminative rhetoric, a significant number of sarcastic comments were also detected by critical discourse analysis. It is observed that sarcasm is instrumentalized to reproduce superiority over refugees as well as criticizing official policies. Such comments cannot simply be considered as “innocent jokes” and are indeed part of a vicious cycle of violence and function like hate speech and discriminatory rhetoric.

The most common prime-time program format on mainstream TV news channels in Turkey is discussion ... more The most common prime-time program format on mainstream TV news channels in Turkey is discussion programs that tend to last for several hours. This study, conducted in the aftermath of the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, when the country was in a state of emergency, examines the role of these programs in shaping public opinion by analyzing which agenda is being reproduced by media professionals and media experts. By adapting both qualitative and quantitative research tools, this study advances the following conclusions: 1) Journalists working in mainstream news channels and experts invited to programs on these channels are confined to an agenda set by government officials, and discuss issues within the framework set by those officials. 2) Despite the low ratings of such programs, the owners of these media outlets, with little or no bargaining power in the face of official authority following the state of emergency, are obliged to operate within the red lines drawn by government as the only option to securing the longer-term interests of their businesses in other sectors. 3) Under these constraints, some major topics that are in the public interest are either totally ignored or given little coverage.

The Production of Opinion on Turkish TV Channels: Discussion Programs and Technicians of Opinion ... more The Production of Opinion on Turkish TV Channels: Discussion Programs and Technicians of Opinion This study aims to demonstrate how the opinion is produced and technicians of opinion are selected for debate programs in TV news channels in Turkey. For this purpose, discussion programs that were broadcast between November 24-2016 and October 4, 2016 on three main news channels; NTV, Cnn Türk and Habertürk were analysed. In addition to this, in depth interviews were conducted with the journalists working in these channels as well as the experts who appeared on these screens and with those who had been sidelined because of political reasons. The study demonstrates that technicians of opinion in these programs are selected through an effective filtering mechanism. Can Ertuna, Tunus'ta hükümeti deviren eylemlerden, Mısır'da birbirinin peşi sıra gelen iki iktidar değişikliğinin öyküsüne, Libya'daki çöl savaşlarından, Halep'teki kanlı sokak çatışmalarına, İstanbul-Hatay arasındaki "cihat ekspresi"nden, Türkiye-Suriye sınırında yaşananlara kadar birçok olayı, tanıklıklarına, aktarımlara, belgelere dayanarak anlatıyor. Meydanları dolduranların mücadeleleri, rejimlerin sonunu hazırlayan toplumsal koşullar ve uluslararası güç çekişmesinin seyri çerçevesinde, objektif bir habercilik diliyle aktarılıyor.
Bakanlığın Facebook ve YouTube sayfalarına yüklenen savaşla ilgili videoların %45’inin İHA kaynaklı olduğu saptanmıştır. Uluslararası medyanın da yoğun şekilde değindiği bu videolar sadece internet ortamında yaygınlaşmamış, aynı zamanda, genellikle editöryal süzgeçten geçirilmeden ham şekilde Türkiye’deki medya kuruluşları tarafından da kullanılmışlardır. Savaş alanından gelen bu görüntülerin artan kullanımı, barış gazeteciliği perspektifinden yeni soruları da gündeme getirmektedir. Bu çalışmada, savaş meydanına sınırsız erişim ve görsel kanıt olanağı sunması nedeniyle öne çıkarılan insansız hava aracı görüntülerinin içkin şekilde savaş odaklı olduğu savunulmaktadır. Ordunun servis ettiği halde, ham biçimde kullanıldığında seçkin ve propaganda odaklı olan bu görüntüler, izleyiciyi kapalı bir zaman ve mekâna hapsetmekte, dünyayı “biz” ve “onlar” arasında bölerek, “onların” hedef olarak algılanmasını pekiştirmektedir.
Drones, with their ever-increasing use in recent warfare, are capable of transmitting high-quality images, which might then be exploited for propaganda purposes by the opposing forces in a war. In this article, the
release of drone footages by the Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan during the 44-day war in Karabakh against the Armenian forces in 2020 is analyzed, and the Turkish media’s approach to this matter is evaluated. It was observed that 45% of the videos uploaded to the Ministry’s Facebook and YouTube
accounts were taken by drones. These videos frequently mentioned by the international media not only circulated on the internet but also were used by the Turkish media, often without being edited. The increasing use of such footages from battlefields also poses new questions in terms of peace journalism. This paper claims that drone footages that are promoted to provide visual journalistic evidence and unlimited access to battlefields have intrinsic war-oriented characteristics. When used as directly shared by
the military, such raw footages serve an elite and propaganda-oriented attitude and shut the viewer into a closed space and time, dividing the world into “us” and “them” while contributing to the perception of “them” being the target.
