This webinar will focus on nonprescription medications used for self-care of cough and cold symptoms. The presentation will start with an overview of the symptoms of cough and cold, exclusions for self-care, and common treatment strategies. With each treatment strategy, evidence related to safety and efficacy will be presented with a focus on recent efficacy concerns and potential OTC medications of misuse. The presentation will conclude with a review of the steps in the QuEST process and application to a patient case scenario.

This 2 hour live CE is on the topic of sterile compounding of nonhazardous and hazardous drugs and aims to fulfill the requirements for the Alabama State Board of Pharmacy for recertification for pharmacists involved in parenteral compounding.

This program has been approved by the ALBOP for continuing education didactic renewal requirements for pharmacists certified in sterile compounding. To fully comply with the ALBOP sterile compounding renewal requirements for both didactic and practical components, participants must complete their practical component outside of this program offering. Results from fingertip/ media fill tests will fulfill the practical component requirement.

This presentation summarizes the current immunization recommendations from the ACIP for pediatric and adult populations. Immunization recommendations are updated three times a year by ACIP, and pharmacists must remain up-to-date with this information for patient care. This presentation will review how to determine what vaccines a patient needs, provide an update on immunization requirements, and discuss best practices and techniques for administering vaccines.

Incomplete or inaccurate prescription information can result in prescriptions not being transmitted to the controlled substance database, which can cause inaccurate patient records, complications between prescribers and their regulatory boards, and a diminished clinical tool for healthcare providers. 

Navigating Medicare Advantage Plans: Maximizing Plan Utilization for Better Health Outcomes

Medicare is a national health insurance program run by the federal government of the United States available to adults aged 65 or older and those younger with certain disease states and disabilities. With over 66 million participants enrolled, it is one of the largest health insurance programs in the country and consists of four major parts: A, B, C, and D. Recorded Heart of the Matter: Tackling Chronic Coronary Disease

Chronic coronary disease (CCD), formerly known as "stable ischemic heart disease," encompasses a diverse range of conditions, including both obstructive and nonobstructive coronary artery disease (CAD), with or without a history of myocardial infarction (MI) or revascularization. It also includes ischemic heart disease diagnosed solely through noninvasive testing and chronic angina syndromes arising from various underlying causes. Approximately 20 million people in the United States live with CCD, and it remains a leading cause of death. This presentation will review current treatment guidelines, discuss the literature evaluating safety and efficacy of various therapies, including antithrombotic agents, for the treatment of CCD.

Recorded Medication Management for Older Adults: Drug Interactions

This presentation will cover the essentials of drug interactions (recognize, evaluate, mitigate) with specific focus on drug-drug and drug disease interactions in older adults (i.e. 65 years of age or older). Older adults are more likely than younger adults to take numerous concomitant medications and have multiple comorbidities, increasing their risk of drug interactions and subsequent adverse drug events. Unique evidence-based resources and mitigation strategies can be employed within the older adult population, and education regarding these resources and strategies will be provided. Education will be delivered via a slide set, with embedded multiple-choice questions posed to the audience to assess learning in this knowledge-based session.

Recorded 2024 LIVE @ LUNCH - The "Push" For Weight Loss: Updates On Pharmacotherapy For Weight Loss

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2022 Adult Obesity Prevalence Map lists Alabama as one of 19 states with an adult obesity prevalence at or above 35%. Recent survey data indicates that 1 in 8 adults in the United States have used a GLP-1 RA at some point in their life and approximately 15 million people – are currently using a GLP-1 RA. Recommendations and guidelines that provide guidance to clinicians regarding obesity management have been published by AHA/ACC/TOS, the Endocrine Society, and AACE/ACE. More recently published guidelines, including those from the Obesity Medicine Association and the American Gastroenterologic Association, recognize obesity as a disease and the importance of medical management. These evidence-based clinical practice recommendations are commonly utilized to provide comprehensive management for persons of higher weight. Key updates to the management of obesity, will be highlighted in the session. Over the last twelve years, the FDA-approved pharmacotherapy options for weight loss have expanded and there are now 6 options approved for long-term use. The benefits and safety considerations of these agents in management of persons of higher weight will be highlighted. Pharmacists are faced with trying to keep up with the new clinical practice guidelines, data, and new medications and being ready to apply it to patient cases. A variety of cases in patients with comorbidities that can impact management of higher weight will be presented to the attendees. Discussion of the best option for the management of the patient cases will be reviewed based on the evidence presented.

Recorded Contraceptive Compass: A Journey To Personalized Protection

Family planning and contraceptive care have recently been debated within the state of Alabama . The Supreme Court of Alabama's February ruling that cryogenic IVF embryos be recognized as children and entitled to legal protection has resulted in bills proposing civil and criminal immunity for IVF facilities (S 159) and protecting access to contraceptive care (HB 279). Although Alabama state law does not specifically grant pharmacists authority to prescribe contraception, HB 279 (introduced in March) lists pharmacists as healthcare providers who can "legally dispense or provide information on marketed contraceptives." If this bill is passed, it will provide increased awareness of pharmacists providing contraceptive counseling. In order to be prepared, pharmacists will need to be familiar with the various contraceptives available and be prepared to provide counseling pearls and recommendations for new contraceptive therapies including over-the-counter progestin-only pill, prescription progestin-only pill, patch, ring, vaginal gel, and intrauterine devices. This presentation will focus on updates in contraceptive therapies and ways to recommend appropriate treatment to mitigate various side effects.
