  • The Australian Government underlined its steadfast support for Ukraine announcing the gifting of 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. This will bolster the Armed Forces of Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion. This latest package, valued at approximately $245 million, will add to the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s firepower and mobility, and complement partners’ support for Ukraine’s armoured brigades. This announcement brings the total value of Australia’s military assistance to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion to over $1.3 billion, and overall support to more than $1.5 billion. Minister for Defence Industry and Capability Delivery, the Hon Pat Conroy MP will be at the NATO Defence Ministers' Meeting in Brussels and will be confirming this news directly with his Ukrainian counterpart. The M1A1 Abrams tanks have been an important capability for the Australian Army, providing substantial defence against enemy fire and improvised explosive devices. As they have done for Australia, the Abrams tanks will see both the capability and resistance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine further bolstered. As was announced in January 2022, the Australian Army M1A1 Abrams are to be replaced by the M1A2 fleet. To support the transition, the Australian Army will retain a small number of M1A1 Abrams tanks to assist the introduction of the new M1A2 fleet. The Australian Defence Force also continues to make significant contributions to multinational efforts to train Ukrainian military personnel under Operation Kudu. The Australian Government will continue to work with the Government of Ukraine and our international partners to deliver meaningful support for Ukraine to end the conflict on its terms. • Thomas Global Systems has been awarded a multi-year contract to supply advanced immersive training systems for the AS21 Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) as part of Hanwha Defence Australia’s delivery of the LAND 400 Phase 3 program for the Commonwealth of Australia. Under the contract, Thomas Global Systems will supply Hanwha Defence Australia with IFV Trainers (IFV-Ts), leveraging Thomas Global’s advanced immersive tactical training (ITT) system architecture to supply the Australian Army with a world-leading Infantry Fighting Vehicle training capability. The AS21 Redback IFV-Ts are intended to form part of the Training System for AS21 Redback Introduction Into Service and Sustainment activities. The IFV-Ts will provide high-fidelity immersive simulation for the crew, comprising the commander, gunner, driver and integrated with the infantry team commander, in a single system capable of networking for collective manoeuver training. “We are honoured to be selected by Hanwha Defence Australia to deliver this important simulation capability for AS21 Redback and the Australian Army,” said Michael Hall, Vice President & General Manager, Simulation & Training Solutions at Thomas Global Systems. “The contract award recognises the world-class capability of our Simulation & Training business, and demonstrates that Australian industry has the capacity to deliver. This contract will enable Thomas Global Systems and our Australian supply chain partners to further develop our sovereign design and manufacturing capabilities as we deliver a world-class immersive training system for the Australian Army.” The Redback is a fifth-generation IFV equipped with sensor technology usually found on advanced jet fighters and developed specifically for Australian Infantry, with advantages built into it from the ground up across mobility, lethality and protection aspects. LAND 400 Phase 3 will deliver 129 Redback IFVs to the Australian Army from 2027. Design of the IFV-T has already commenced, with production planned for 2026-2027 and deliveries in 2028. The program will be delivered from Thomas Global’s advanced design and manufacturing facility in Newington, NSW and executed working together with a range of proven Australian supply chain partners, including partners in regional areas. The contract award builds on the Company’s 20-year track record in military training and simulation, and means Thomas Global Systems will now be delivering training systems for all new Australian Army armoured fighting vehicle platforms.

  • Defence is modernising Defence Industry Security Program (DISP) membership processes, with the latest DISP Membership Portal capability release enabling self-management services for existing DISP companies. Free to join and open to any Australian entity wishing to become part of the Defence industry supply chain, DISP is a membership-based program designed to provide industry with security advice and support to ensure organisations have the right security in place for Defence tenders and contracts. The initial release of the portal in December 2023 allowed companies to complete and lodge membership applications online. This new capability release will also uplift the cyber security assessment process to align with the Australian Cyber Security Centre Essential Eight mitigation strategies. Under the Defence Industry Development Grants Program, up to $100,000 is available to assist eligible small to medium enterprises to establish and maintain security accreditation and controls, in line with the DISP – including cyber security. Defence Chief Security Officer, Peter West, said the latest capability release would make it easier for industry to manage their membership. “The DISP Member Portal simplifies the process for membership self-management and provides improved security for member information,” Mr West said. “This launch represents significant progress towards modernising membership processes without compromising security objectives – as outlined in the Defence Industry Development Strategy (DIDS).” A further DISP Portal release planned for Quarter 4, 2024 will deliver fully digitised member services, including a full suite of membership self-reporting and self-service tools, and strengthen DISP compliance capabilities.
