  • After nearly seven years of service, Buccaneer, the shoebox-sized satellite launched by the University of New South Wales UNSW Canberra Space, has re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere and burned up, its successful mission finally over. Dubbed the Buccaneer Risk Mitigation Mission, launching the satellite was a collaboration between UNSW Canberra Space and the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG). It was launched in November 2017 from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, as part of a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Educational Launch of Nanosatellites program. Teams from UNSW Canberra and DSTG commanded the satellite from Australia and shared daily communication with it. The satellite featured a camera developed by UNSW Canberra and a GPS system designed by UNSW Sydney. The mission helped Defence to fine-tune the performance of Australia’s over-horizon radar network, which can detect objects hundreds or thousands of kilometres beyond traditional radar limits and is a crucial part of Australia’s defence. Researchers were also able to collect a huge amount of data from the satellite using the international Falcon Telescope Network, including with the telescope based at UNSW Canberra. The data of the satellite’s movement in Low Earth Orbit greatly benefited the university’s research into situational awareness in space. However, UNSW Canberra Space acting director Melrose Brown said the mission’s greatest success was the experience UNSW researchers and support staff gained from being involved in it. “The mission provided great insight into the planning, management and operational techniques required for this kind of endeavour,” Dr Brown said. “It proved that our people have the knowledge and capability to successfully manage these types of missions. "It established UNSW Canberra as a key partner for Defence, government and other industry leaders to meet the needs of Australia’s rapidly growing space sector. “The effects of this mission will continue to help both UNSW Canberra and DSTG in any future missions and collaborations.” The sequel ’Main Mission’, due to launch next year, will consist of a single CubeSat manufactured by Adelaide-based Inovor Technologies and remain in space for 12 months.

  • Leading Canadian rocket manufacturer Reaction Dynamics has signed a contract with Australian company Southern Launch to conduct the inaugural launch and flight of their RE-102 hybrid rocket engine and Aurora vehicle from the South Australian Koonibba Test Range in 2025. The Aurora suborbital mission will serve as the maiden flight qualification test for Reaction Dynamics’ rocket engine within the vacuum of space. This two-stage vehicle is designed to reach an altitude of 125 km above Earth, providing critical performance data and demonstrating Reaction Dynamics’ technological capabilities in preparation for future orbital missions. This flight will mark a historic milestone as the one of the first demonstrations of a hybrid rocket engine operating in space. "Southern Launch exists to help companies like Reaction Dynamics test their breakthrough technology," said Southern Launch CEO Lloyd Damp. "We are proud to be hosting the Aurora suborbital mission from the Koonibba Test Range. This mission will test a novel hybrid propulsion system which will ultimately result in technological breakthroughs that will propel the entire space industry forward." The Aurora mission will focus on the validation of Reaction Dynamics' RE-102 hybrid rocket engine, which leverages a groundbreaking advancement as part of the first-ever hybrid propulsion system family to incorporate regeneratively-cooled thrust chamber assemblies. Reaction Dynamics CEO Bachar Elzein says, "We believe that the RE-102 hybrid rocket engine will be the most efficient hybrid rocket engine in the world. "Extensive hot fire tests have shown the that the engine is able to maintain performance during prolonged burn periods thanks to our patented innovations. We are eager to put this technology to the test in the vacuum of space during our upcoming suborbital mission from the Koonibba Test Range." The Aurora suborbital rocket is 7.3 metres tall and will launch from the Mid-Range Launch Rail that Southern Launch has onsite for customers to use at the Koonibba Test Range.

  • Western Australia’s police force will gain a Pilatus Aircraft Ltd PC-24 jet aircraft and upgraded Pilatus PC-12 turboprops under a $15.8 million investment over the next four years. The Pilatus PC-24 can carry a team of eight officers and be reconfigured to hold cargo including policing equipment, evidence and emergency supplies. With delivery expected by early-mid 2026, it will slash current travel time approximately in half and can land on unsealed airstrips in outback WA. It means specialist police from Perth such as Tactical Response Group Officers, detectives, forensic teams or Chaplains can be on the ground in Kununurra, for example, around three hours faster. Currently a fully packed PC-12 aircraft would take up to six hours to reach the same destination and need to stop to refuel. "Time is critical when it comes responding to emergencies and solving crime, and I want to arm our police force with the best tools on the global market to get the job done,” said WA Police Minister Paul Papalia. "WA is a vast State and remains the largest non-federal law enforcement jurisdiction in the world.” The Pilatus PC24 has a solid track record of remote and regional operations in Australia, with 34 in service with the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
