A study by University of Wollongong, Australia researchers have found that the greatest shortfalls in the medical workforce are in small rural towns. The study, published in the Australian Journal of Rural Health, also revealed small rural towns have the lowest number of nurses and allied health care workers per capita, which is likely to lead to poor health outcomes for those regions. “Many would expect the greatest staffing shortfalls to be in remote and very remote Australia, but we found it’s actually small rural towns suffering the most,” commented Dr Colin Cortie, lead author of the report. The article suggests new funding models for health services in small rural towns could be one solution to the problem. The latest issue of the Australian Journal of Rural Health: Volume 32, Issue 5 is out now. The issue carries systematic reviews, narrative reviews, original research, practice insights, commentary, Letters to the Editor and a short report. The From the Alliance piece, ‘Real change for primary care is likely to be dependent on the next National Health Reform Agreement’, is written by the Alliance’s Director, Policy and Strategy Development Margaret Deerain. The article discusses the recommendations which have been set to inform the next National Health Reform Agreement which are in line with our advocacy to call for a 10-year National Rural Health Strategy. We believe a rural and remote policy and funding schedule to the next National Health Reform Agreement would go a long way to outlining key priorities and funding requirements for rural communities.
