#Retinoblastoma is the most common eye cancer among children and can be fatal if left untreated. Children referred to Open Eyes Nepal undergo chemotherapy, enucleation or removal of the eyeball, and receive expensive custom-fit prosthesis free of charge. ACU’s funding arrangement is part of a four-year #partnership with Open Eyes Nepal, a not-for-profit organisation, that provides free treatment for children with retinoblastoma. It has enabled Open Eyes Nepal to continue to support children and families who suffer from the impacts of retinoblastoma. In the 18 months since the ACU/Open Eyes Nepal partnership began, around 40 patients have received free treatment at the Tilganga Institute with around 28 receiving custom-made prosthetic eyes. What an incredible week in Sydney.  Last week we hosted both the Strategic Alliance of Catholic Universities (SACRU) Governing Board and Workshop and then the Association of South East and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASEACCU) 30th Annual Conference.  We had more than 220 colleagues and students from more than 50 international universities in our region as well as from Europe and the Americas. It was an incredible honour to welcome so many wonderful institutions to ACU’s North Sydney Campus, to explore important issues associated with collaboration, research teaching, engagement and mission.   A big thank you to all my ACU colleagues, to pour colleagues in the SACRU and ASEACCU secretariats, and to all the rectors, presidents staff and students who joined us from around the world.  #acu #education #universities #ASEACCU

The opening events of the 30th Annual Conference for the Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities at the Australian Catholic University North Sydney campus kicked off yesterday with a welcome from our First Peoples. Somewhat unique the annual conference includes students and staff - creating new connections for common purpose in our region as we discuss our purpose and impact for our students, our communities and globally. Together and individually we all help “transform the future through meaningful impact” ( Professor Zlatko Skrbis in our Presidents Session this morning discussing social impact ). This weeks marks a historic moment for ACU, as first-time hosts of the ASEACCU Conference. Tomorrow we will welcome more than 200 guests to our North Sydney Campus for the 30th ASEACCU Conference. ASEACCU, or the Association of Southeast and East Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities, is a regional association of higher education institutions from Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Macao, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. During the 30th ASEACCU Conference at ACU North Sydney, our delegates will reflect on the identity and purpose of a Catholic university, including the social impact of Catholic higher education in secular societies, and the value of service-learning in university curriculum. To mark this historic occasion, our own Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Zlatko Skrbis has had an op-ed published in The Catholic Weekly, reaffirming the place of Australia's two Catholic universities, and the tremendous value we offer to the sector and our students.
