Some interesting findings in KPMG's latest economic outlook (Q2 2024) for Australia, and their observations re the broader labour market support some of what we are seeing at the exec level at SHK. While unemployment remains low, wage growth is slowing (which shows up for us as a reduction in delta between candidates’ existing salaries and what they are being offered by hiring organisations). In other words, while the market for senior executive remains reasonably buoyant and is arguably strengthening from where it was 3-6 months ago, the big bumps in pay we saw coming through during the peak inflationary period of 12-18 months ago are no longer commonly on offer. The whole report is worth a read, with the labour market section on page 13.

Arbor Permanent Owners is a decentralised holding company that is following a well-trodden playbook: investing in smaller, asset-light companies with strong market positions and predictable cash flows that can be reinvested in further acquisitions. Our focus is acquiring “Great Australian SMEs”: market leaders in a niche, typically family owned , with EBITDA between A$3m and $6m. Unlike Private Equity, we differentiate ourselves through a multi-decade investment horizon. We view potential targets from an "owner" rather than an "exit-driven" shareholder perspective. Arbor Permanent Owners is targeting the investment theme of corporate succession - acquiring Great Australian family owned businesses from retiring owners. We acknowledge that this investment model is ”in vogue” across the pond in the American and European markets. There are yet to be any significant folks like us in Australia. We aspire to be the dominant player in our island nation. We believe that our edge lies in acquisitions that are too sub-scale, too operationally unsophisticated, or too long-term minded to be good bets for our private equity peers. As a result, we avoid intense competition from private equity firms, ultimately allowing for value accretive acquisition multiples. Our playbook is simple: ✅Pay fair prices for great businesses; ✅Recruit, indoctrinate and incentivise best in class leaders; and ✅Reinvest and compound cash flows into more acquisitions with a modest use of leverage. By repeating this playbook, guided by our north-star metric of ROIC > 20% and executed over the long-term (30 years), we will all end up with a fine result. Finally and most importantly, Arbor Permanent Owners is led by experienced founders and business operators. We earned the right to acquire and steward businesses. We have degrees, but we didn’t learn business from a textbook. We learned it from sleeping under the desk, the stress of unpaid invoices and the scramble to meet payroll. We've seen the impact of both good hires and bad ones. There’s no substitute for experience, and no faster way to gain it by building something from the ground up. Only those who have lived the journey of entrepreneurship will understand this. We can see a fellow business owner eye-to-eye and immediately build a mutual respect, a connection that’s difficult to describe; like a telepathy. It comes from shared experiences and mutual understanding that this game of business is not for the faint hearted - and that when it comes to pass the baton, it should be to the right set of hands.
