This league, traditionally the domain of independent clubs, has led to strong responses from Gold Coast Knights Football Club, Wynnum Wolves FC, Peninsula Power Football Club, Rochedale Rovers FC Inc Moreton City Excelsior Brisbane City Football Club and Lions Football Club (representing a majority of the league). Is your sports club looking into the future? A key factor that sports clubs need to consider when strategic planning is the future trends of the county and how these will impact on how we cater for our players, coaches, administrators and every other connected stakeholder. Population projections in New Zealand predict we may reach 6 million people in the next decade or two. Add to this the regional migration trends of residents moving out of the main centres and we could have a very different looking sports system in years to come. Seeing academic papers that back your inherent feeling/thoughts/experience to reinforce your work is great BUT more importantly it shares with you thoughts and avenues for your mind to roll down that you may not have considered before. Rochelle Eime et al. in their latest publication titled "The motivations to play organised club-based sport in Australia" has done that for me today. I particularly liked the results showing that those who participate more in sport, want to keep doing more! For me it reinforces the need for everyone to get a good, consistent dose of sport early on in their lives so the act of participating and being active is not a barrier in itself (harder to start the older you get). Findings like these combined with the Play Well Strategy from the Australian Sports Commission gives me optimism that we can turn around these declining physical activity numbers if we're focused on people having positive sport experiences that suit their needs. Australia’s identity is increasingly defined by its multiculturalism, and the next generation will be even more diverse. As our population evolves, sports organisations must engage with multicultural communities, not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it is a strategic imperative. To survive and then thrive, we must look beyond the children of former players. For sports to flourish, they need to nurture talent from all backgrounds, ensuring that everyone has a place in sport. Embracing our nation’s rich diversity will be crucial for the continued success of sports. To support an understanding of multicultural communities, the ASC, led by Dana Assenheim, Adam Cassidy and Nader Daher, and supported by the The LOTE Agency, has developed a presentation on the Changing Face of Australia. This presentation provides valuable insights and information that is a must read for all sports administrators.

The #NRL grand final is just around the corner. I found this article really interesting as it explores why just two clubs have won 9 premierships between them over the past two decades. Simple conclusion - free markets, in terms of player movements and trade, allow for a market concentration of power.

The 2023 A-League Grand Final is a night that I’ll never forget. A 6-1 victory for Central Coast Mariners Football Club against a very strong Melbourne City team. A few points on our preparation for the most important match of the season: - We had FULL squad availability for the Grand Final - Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio’s (ACWR) were “green” (meaning right in the sweet spot in terms of training load) for the whole squad - Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) were also “green” for the whole squad (as the season progressed, I leaned more toward EWMA (while always checking ACWR) - Where we really benefitted was employing a holistic high-speed model fully supported by coaching staff Nick Montgomery & Sérgio Raimundo that complimented our tactical & technical approach all season. We adapted a model championed by Andreas Beck (ex-Dortmund Head of Sports Science). It featured: - Aiming to get players to “hit” 90% of their highest speed within the last 7-10 days of training/playing - Technique coaching/improving (my sprinting background certainly helped here) - A strength program featuring isometric, concentric & selected eccentric exercises (hip & knee dominant) - Regular strength screening for muscle imbalance, recovery indication & overall wellness - Combined with CNS involvement considerations (BIG Charlie Francis influence here!), we enjoyed a successful season with low incidence of soft tissue injury - An AMS that captured it all! As several studies have shown, having all/most of your squad available for selection is an extremely important determinant in elite team sports & chance of success Action Apps – Fully customisable - Better insights – Informed decisions – Peak performance

Great to see the announcement of a National Gender Equity in Sports Governance Policy today! The new national policy covers: 1️⃣ board membership 2️⃣ board leadership (chairs and deputy chairs) 3️⃣ membership of key sub-committees, for select organisations Since the introduction of Balance the Board Policy in Victoria in 2019, the number of state sporting organisations with a minimum of 40% women directors has more than doubled. Research by Deakin University, funded through the Change Our Game Research Grants Program, found that having gender diversity on boards contributes to more effective decision making, communication, positive culture and better risk management. Victoria will continue with the existing minimum 40% representation of women on boards. The Office for Women in Sport and Recreation will soon commence consultation with sporting organisations on support and timelines for the board leadership and sub-committees elements. Having worked with sporting organisations on the introduction of Balance the Board in Victoria, as a CEO working with a Board to achieve gender balance, as a current director benefiting from having diversity on a board and as part of monitoring the impact of Balance the Board, it’s great to see a national policy to drive further change. Some unqualified thoughts on Aus Sport, let me know what you think Football Is it time for the A-League to fall back under FA’s control? APL have given it a crack but seem to have failed on most fronts including the use of the the $140M received by selling 33% to Silverlake. By separating from FA, the APL are missing out on so many positives, huge participation numbers & the juggernaut that the Matildas are becoming. Surely there’s more synergy back all together? A strong domestic competition to help develop future national stars. Rugby Union Union is thriving in the heartlands of private school affluent areas of Brisbane & Sydney. These schools are producing talented players but are losing most of them as soon as they graduate, off to the AFL & NRL. They need to increase the talent pool, get kids playing from the country and state schools. The problem is the well resourced grassroots programs of the AFL (Auskick) and NRL (League Stars) are already at work. Also a discussion on the Giteau rule. The Wallabies drive the much needed revenue to help fund our super rugby domestic competition. Why not pick our side like the Socceroos do? Understand there is a trade off between quality and cohesion. NRL/NRLW Fun fact: The women’s interstate challenge between NSW and QLD has existed since 1999. QLD had a ridiculous 17 year winning streak that was ended in 2017. Launched as Origin in 2018, it’s turning into a commercial beast, record crowds and huge TV viewership. No real comment on this but I’m sure NRL HQ are pretty chuffed with the state of the women’s game & the value it’s adding. Expansion is exciting, so many viable locations. Love the passion for the game in PNG, just think we need to invest in building out the pathways first. Justin Olam shouldn’t be the only NRL graduate from the Hunters. When we do have a NRL team there, for it to have sustainable success it should be full of local heroes with a sprinkling of imported talent. Not the other way around AFL/AFLW Such a beast with huge crowds and viewership & genuinely a national footprint. Interesting to see how they go with AFLW, I think they’re abit confused as to where it belongs in the calendar. AFL games go for ~ 3 hours so not really feasible to do double headers in comparison to NRL. What do you think they should do?
