Yoorrook Justice Commission
Government Relations Services
The first formal truth-telling process into injustices experienced by First Peoples in Victoria
About us
The Yoorrook Justice Commission is the first formal truth-telling process into historical and ongoing injustices experienced by First Peoples in Victoria. Yoorrook was set up by agreement between the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria and the Victorian Government, but operates independently of both. Yoorrook delivered an interim report in June 2022, a critical issues report in August 2023, and will deliver a final report in 2025. Yoorrook is led by five Commissioners, of whom 4 are Aboriginal and 3 are Victorian First Peoples. The Commissioners bring a vast range of knowledge and experience about First Peoples’ knowledge, systemic disadvantage, land rights, history, law, trauma and healing.

"When we understand what has happened in the past and how this impacts the present, we can create a better future and have a better understanding between all Victorians." Chair Eleanor Bourke closes Descendants Day hearing with gratitude and encouragement to other Victorians to come forward. Today we've heard evidence from three non-Indigenous people to help build a shared understanding of Victoria’s colonial history. The Descendants Day hearing has shown truth-telling isn’t a process only for First Peoples to take part in. All Victorians have a role to play. We encourage all Victorians to come forward to share their stories as part of the State’s truth-telling process by making a submission. "If we want to be able to hold our heads high and be part of that story, we need to own up and face what's really happened here. And I don't think that's really been done very well up until this point, so this truth-telling process is a wonderful way of beginning that and hopefully that will spread around the whole of Australia." Dr Katrina Kell, a fourth-generation descendant of Captain James Liddell today shared the story of and apologised for her ancestor's part in "atrocities that have been inflicted" on First Peoples. "It came as a shock to learn that the attempted elimination [of First Nations peoples] continued after frontier violence diminished and I say 'diminished' because it really probably hasn't ended. "It was a greater shock when I stumbled on the evidence that indicated that a member of my own family had enabled the attempted elimination to be put into law." Peter Sharp, great grandson of former Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, apologises for harm caused by his ancestor. "I think we have all got a duty to do it, as Victorians and Australians. To look at where we live. Investigate the story of European colonisation. Think about what it meant for the people that were there and what happened." Elizabeth Balderstone shares evidence with Commissioners as the current owner of a property in Gippsland on which the ‘Warrigal Creek’ massacre occurred in 1843. Stay tuned to hear from other witnesses at Yoorrook's historical Descendants Day. #TruthTelling #FirstPeoples #descendants

Yoorrook's Descendants Day hearing today will help build a shared understanding of Victoria’s colonial history, with non-Indigenous witnesses giving evidence. The hearing is a day for all Victorians to listen and learn the truth about Victoria’s colonial history, and the unbroken line of injustice running from 1834 to this day. This hearing will also show truth-telling isn’t a process only for First Peoples to take part in. All Victorians have a role to play. For mob, we warn there may be some distressing historic content given as part of the evidence. Watch the hearings live on the Yoorrook website or Facebook page or alternatively follow along via live tweeting. Please note that indicative timings noted in the schedule are subject to change.
