This week, we are proud to sponsor the 2024 New Zealand Insurance Law Association (NZILA) Conference held in Christchurch | Ōtautahi, where industry leaders will come together and explore the future of insurance law. We’re particularly excited to highlight our cyber experts who will be sharing their insights. Joseph Fitzgerald, who heads our New Zealand Cyber, Privacy + Data Security practice, will dive into the world of artificial intelligence. He will explore the implications of AI use in the legal and liability space, AI’s evolving role in the insurance industry, as well as considering AI guidance and regulation. This is a must-attend session if you’re curious about AI and what this might mean for you. Laura Glasson, senior associate from our local Christchurch team, will be part of the legal update panel. She will discuss the concept of bailment rights to data, considering recent global developments and what this might mean for technology professionals in a New Zealand context. Our wider W+K team from across the motu will also be at the conference and look forward to catching up with everyone. #insurancelaw #cybersecurity #artificialintelligence

Human Rights Lawyer | Law Firm Partner | Pro Bono and Community Leader | Policy Advisor

Wotton + Kearney is a proud supporter of the campaign for an Australian Human Rights Act. Hosting the Human Rights Law Centre's briefing event, I spoke about how we see through our day to day pro bono work the urgent need for an Australian Human Rights Act to address gaps in protection. For me, the most memorable call came from Rob Hulls, the former Victorian Attorney General who was able to secure the Victorian Charter of Human Rights: "If you want your grandmother in aged care to have the dignity of a shower curtain when she's being bathed, then you want a Human Rights Act" He was referring to a case where the Victorian Charter led to the installation of a shower curtain to guarantee the privacy and dignity of an aged care resident following a routine visit by a Department of Services Officer who noticed carers assisting a client to shower without any privacy screening. Human rights are for all of us. You can sign up here https://lnkd.in/gumWhE6s

Australia is the only liberal democracy without a national human rights act. That's why we hosted a briefing with organisations, lawyers and partners on the campaign for an Australian Human Rights Act. An Australian Human Rights Act would put human rights at the heart of our laws and policies. This is the best chance that we have in a decade of securing a Human Rights Act. Thanks to Rob Hulls for sharing his story of securing a Victorian Charter of Human Rights, and to Wotton + Kearney for partnering with us for the event. When it comes to powering the future, asset management poses complex challenges that are crucial for owners and insurers to address. In today’s panel discussion at the Asia Power Forum, Jackie B. Surtani, Shireen Prince, SHOTARO NAGANO and S.J. Machado shed light on important considerations when managing assets in the energy transition, including: – the significant challenges posed by the diverse geography of countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines, with their many unconnected islands, meaning tailored strategies must be developed to effectively manage resources and infrastructure in each region, and – the importance of a long-term perspective when investing in energy assets, with strategic asset management key to mitigating the risk of stranded assets as technology continues to advance. #APF2024 #asiapowerforum #powergeneration #energytransition #renewableenergy

For the next panel discussion, the APF attendees were given an illuminating insight into the world of Asset Management and how this is navigated through the #energytransition. Jackie B. Surtani Asian Development Bank (ADB) first gave the audience a comprehensive overview of their financial support to clients wanting to accelerate their transition. Before we then heard from Shotaro Nagano Shireen Prince and S.J. Machado about their own journeys of transition and how they adequately manage their assets accordingly. Thank you all for your contributions #APF2024 #Asiapowerforum #energytransition

There’s a lot to unpack from Anders Røpke and Morten Handberg from Wind Power LAB’s session at the Asia Power Forum! Thank you both for sharing your technical expertise with us. Some crucial points were highlighted: – wind turbines are now reaching heights of 140 metres, causing increased structural fatigue in the blades – turbine certifications have not kept pace with these changes and present a commercial risk for owners and insurers by not taking the complete spectrum of fatigue forces into account – the biggest threats to offshore wind blades are manufacturing defects, lightning strikes, and challenging operational conditions, and – while bigger is better from a LCOE point of view, the operational reality can be extremely costly. #APF2024 #asiapowerforum #powergeneration #offshorewind
