Woohoo!! Here’s to a great outcome for our client and a real tear-jerker of a review - we really do love what we do 🥹 “THANK YOU. Thank you for the incredible kindness and understanding you showed while I was in such a vulnerable place and entirely unsure of how I wanted to approach not just my return to work after my first child, but my entire career, as I increasingly realised its huge impact on my identity while adjusting to everything that comes with motherhood. You boosted my confidence, reminded me of my value, and gave me practical guidance to help refine my eclectic CV, career goals, and job hunting approach more broadly. You always followed up and touched base to keep me accountable, and you helped me weather what felt like a really long and often disheartening journey of uncertainty (and rejections!). You always helped me keep that sliver of hope and perseverance alive, and I kept imagining myself as that 'happy ending/new beginning' that I've noticed so many others who worked with Workpants eventually attained. And here I am! Thank you, so much, for your compassion and professionalism. I could not recommend you and Workpants more highly. “ #careercounselling #careercoaching #GetHiredAustralia #workingparent #parentalleave

It's okay to take a redundancy personally - we think it is personal.

Founder at Workpants | Career Counselling for Parents and Workplaces

Your role has been made redundant and then you're told "It's not personal". When exactly isn't it personal? You're suddenly involuntarily unemployed. You might not even get an honest reason why. Career theory demonstrates how intermingled our work is with the other facets of life. Whether right or wrong we describe ourselves as what we do. A common obstacle after redundancy is self-esteem. Our ability to "earn a living" is personal. It impacts everything and everyone our wage depends on. It's concerning how often it happens to new parents. And if you take redundancy personally, are you judged because you're not quite ready for the silver lining? F that. I think we should take it personally. Maybe then the broader experience for folks will be better. We'll stop pretending that it isn't devastating and demoralising and debilitating and have more care in the way we treat people. One of the valuable things a career counsellor brings to their client relationships is hope. I love that about my work. But I think it's important to give people space to feel a bit shite about redundancy, to express their disappointment, fear, anger and self-doubt before we walk with them down new and exciting paths. So yes, I think redundancy is personal and next time I'll share some tips based on my experience. For now, if you're going through it - it's okay to take it personally. #LinkedInNewsAustralia #GetHiredAustralia #redundancy #jobloss #careercounselling

Tip for getting outside your comfort zone: make it something you care about and your discomfort is no longer the main event!

Founder at Workpants | Career Counselling for Parents and Workplaces

What in the Workpants is going on here? Well from time to time I need to take my own medicine and get outside ye olde zone of comfort. As you might have already seen, I've shared some behind the scenes of the life and trials of a founder and this is the latest instalment. I still feel awkward in front of the camera but it gets a little easier and a lot more fun each time, particularly if it's something you care about. In this instance I'm talking about why early childcare workers deserve a better wage and why Queensland needs to get on the same page as the rest of Australia with free kindy for 3 year olds - try say that three times fast! More of this or something new? Tell me what you'd like to hear about. #comfortzone #workingparents #founder

Accounting is not just about numbers, it’s about people, and many of those people are becoming parents. That’s why we headed to the Accounting Innovators annual summit to share the ways a great parental leave experience creates a win-win!

Quick word association - What’s the first word you think of when I say “accountants”? Was it “numbers”? Any chance it was “innovative”? What about “people”? I took Workpants to the inaugural Accounting Innovators annual summit in Sydney on Friday which was all about innovation and people. Here’s a sample: Holding people accountable is important - 🍇 Kirstin Hunter People do the thinking, and we each do it differently which is important - Sarah Dalziel Some people have hurdles to overcome. Don’t leave them out in order to run a faster race, get rid of the hurdles - Iain Schmidt PCC People wield your technology, help them do this - Inbal Rodnay Try to change the way you’re seeing people, and make room for others who are not like you - Matthew Rowan People in accounting are diverse! Beth O'Leary You need a people strategy - Thomas Sutton People want to be paid fairly, and they are testing the market for the next opportunity if you’re not looking out for them - Natalie Flynn Neha Kowcza CA Tyler Caskey Rakin Hasan, CA And I spoke about people multiplied - the parental leave experience and the opportunity for a win-win. A huge thanks to Shaye Thyer FCA as MC for expertly navigating everyone through a day filled with great content, and to Sonia Gibson and 💡 Karen M. for their dedication and passion for getting everyone in the room. #accounting #parentalleave #AIAS24
