We welcome the next round of reforms to the Family Law Act.
Today, the Attorney-General, the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP, introduced the Family Law Amendment Bill 2024 into Parliament. This Bill builds on landmark reforms to the Family Law Act 1975 that commenced in May, which introduced a safer and clearer framework for making parenting arrangements. These additional reforms will make it safer and simpler for separating families to resolve the property and financial aspects of relationship breakdown. This Bill will ensure the economic impact of family violence on the wealth and welfare of Australian families is considered when resolving property and financial matters after separation. It will provide a framework for determining ownership of a family pet following separation, and make a range of other amendments to make the family law system safer and simpler. Community legal centres help hundreds of thousands of people every year to resolve everyday legal problems. They play a crucial role preventing and responding to domestic and family violence. Frontline family law and family violence services make up the largest areas of work for many of the 150+ centres across Australia. The 2024 Federal Budget failed to provide the urgent funding boost and long-term funding security the community legal sector desperately needs. With less than a year’s guaranteed funding left, community legal centres are in the most uncertain position we have faced in a decade. The costs to our communities of the chronic underfunding of community legal centres include: • More people in prisons and hospitals • Women and children stuck in dangerous situations for longer • People losing their homes and becoming homeless • Households and individuals overwhelmed by debt and financial problems • Families stuck in conflict over custody, child support and family law issues • Asylum seekers facing exploitation due to their visa status. #SaveCommunityLegalCentres: End the funding crisis calls on governments to step up and provide fair funding to community legal centres: • $35 million this year to address the workforce crisis. • At least $270 million per year for community legal centres from 1 July 2025, committed by December 2024. • $95 million for frontline domestic and family violence work. $$$$ TODAY IS EQUAL PAY DAY $$$$ Today, the 19th of August, marks the extra 50 days after the end of the financial year that Australian women must work to earn the same, on average, as men did last year. The national #genderpaygap measures the difference between the average weekly full-time base salary earnings of women and men, expressed as a percentage of men’s earnings. It is a measure of women’s overall position in the paid workforce and does not compare like roles. Research by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency has identified three main contributors to Australia’s gender pay gap: 1️⃣ - gender discrimination (36%) 2️⃣ - care, family responsibilities and workforce participation (33%), 3️⃣ - gender segregation by job type and industry (24%) We have a free advice service for women who have experienced or are experiencing, gendered discrimination, harassment or unequal treatment in their workplace. https://lnkd.in/dqbGZujF And we also offer online information: https://lnkd.in/gwuzKpcr

This is a great little campaign video to come out of the UK... #justdont
Its not banter. It's not harmless. It's not OK. To any men who are watching this and thinking "I would never behave like that". That's fantastic. You are the good guys. Please spread the word. To any men who are watching this and thinking "FFS women can't take a joke. I was just being friendly". No. Even if we laugh it off, or come back with a retort, women hate being accosted in the street with this BS. It's unwanted and intimidating. Sometimes criminal. To any women watching this, you are not alone. You are one of the 86% of women who has been sexually harassed in public. I'm sure that's an underestimated figure, because we don't report it. Sadly, we are handling more and more workplace sexual harassment and sex discrimination cases here at Rebel Law Ltd. I wish that were not so. Thank you Tracy Brabin for shining a light on this behaviour. #sexualharassment #womensrights #discrimination #employmentlaw
