Today is International Day of Care and Support. Everyone needs care. It is the often invisible and mostly unpaid work that sustains families, communities, and economies. The responsibility of providing care falls overwhelmingly on women and girls, who spend more than twice as many hours as men on unpaid care and domestic work. As a result, they miss out on education, paid work, self-care, and more. Our next Lunch & Learn will focus on just this - Jennifer Langton, Head of Advice at Aged Care Steps Pty Ltd will look at the cost of caring - the role of women as unpaid carers, their contribution to the economy & the impact of caring responsibilities on their financial & emotional wellbeing. This impact on carers is increasing with the ageing demographic of our population & longer life spans, requiring more women to dedicate time to caring for older & disabled family members – often while juggling career & children. At the same time, changes to government funding of the aged care system are seeing more funds directed to homecare services, enabling older Australians to live longer at home, with a combination of government funded support & family assistance. These factors will see women increasingly burdened, requiring a supportive work environment & policies to facilitate their engagement with the workforce & the ability to build retirement savings. About us
Women in Super (WIS) is a national advocacy and networking group for women employed in the superannuation and financial services industries. WIS advocates on behalf of its members and women generally to government, politicians, unions, employer organisations, regulators, and superannuation funds to improve women’s retirement prospects and access to superannuation. WIS provides education and support to assist women in gaining opportunities to develop broader business, professional and personal networks, and aims to educate the greater community in order to improve their knowledge of superannuation. WIS strongly supports and encourages the appointment of women to superannuation fund boards, and works with other organisations and stakeholders to achieve this. Each year, WIS oversees the organisation of the Mother’s Day Classic, a national fun run and walk established by the network to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

Did someone say the WIS 30th Anniversary was better than their wedding?! We're not naming any names... Now that the dust has settled, we've had time to reflect on the message The Hon. Julia Gillard AC shared with us, as she spoke so frankly and rousingly about the need for continued action from all of us in the challenge of closing gender gaps. "Gender equality means what it says on the tin. Not a world where women thrive and men are left behind but a world in which everyone can find their own path, free of assumptions about who they should be, and free of unfair barriers which prevent them from getting ahead." Australian women are disadvantaged relative to men in almost every measurable domain. From hourly pay and participation in the labour force to domestic labour and intimate partner violence; these gaps are well-known, and persistent. Deloitte Access Economics recently published the Remaking the Norm report, in collaboration with Australian Investing in Women (AIIW) and Minderoo Foundation, which highlights six ways to remake harmful gender norms – as individuals, policymakers, philanthropists and community and business leaders – to close gaps in the workplace and broader society. Author of the report, Sruthi Srikanthan, Partner, Deloitte Access Economics will explore the findings of this report over breakfast, sharing practical, evidence-based steps that we can take as a society to progress our gender norms to a place of realising the value of a more equitable Australia. It is so hard to believe that the 2024 Women in Super Conference: Threads of Inequality was already a week ago! And a much harder task to try and sum up all of the insights, expertise and unifying ideas into a LinkedIn post. We began the day with Women in Super Policy Committee Chair Ailsa Goodwin launching our updated policy priorities, that were born out of last years' Women's Super Summit, which challenged us to attempt to untangle some of the broader structural threads of inequality that are currently tying our system up into knots. These threads were each addressed by subsequent panel discussions and other keynote presentations. Not wanting to have superficial discussions about the issues, but rather leave attendees with actual solutions and calls to action, we were thrilled to hear so many end the day with actionable tasks to take back to their funds and organisations. Less than two weeks until the 2024 Women in Super Conference: Threads of Inequality. This year, we’ve decided it’s time to start addressing head-on the individual threads of inequality that feed into disadvantage across the life-course and into retirement.
