  • First-year medical students from The University of Queensland got a firsthand look at the rewarding world of rural medicine during their visit to Boonah Hospital this morning. As part of a four-day ‘immersion tour,’ the students explored the unique charms and challenges of rural and remote healthcare. Boonah Hospital’s Senior Medical Officer, Dr. Emily Moody, hopes the experience will inspire these future doctors to consider a career as Rural Generalists. ‘We need to shift the narrative around working in rural areas,’ Dr. Moody said. ‘For me, choosing to work rurally was my first preference—it’s a deeply rewarding career. It’s vital that medical students get this kind of exposure.’ 'The best part of my job is the connection with patients. ‘Every shift, I feel like I’ve made a real difference. Being able to provide care close to home, when patients need it most, never gets old.’ For UQ student Genevieve King, the visit to Boonah was an eye-opener. ‘Coming from a rural community in Bathurst, it’s inspiring to see how much the doctors here love their work and the community,' said Genevieve, 22. ‘It’s made me consider a career in rural medicine. Helping people at their most vulnerable is something I could truly find purpose in.' Dr. Moody’s advice to medical students is simple: ‘Keep an open mind about your career path. Talk to a Rural Generalist and find out what they love about their job.’ ‘I get so much joy from mentoring students at Boonah Hospital. Watching them grow in their skills and confidence is incredibly rewarding.' ‘They experience a broad variety of clinical cases, often within a single shift, and they really enjoy the diversity in a supportive environment.’ Thank you for visiting us! We hope to welcome you back to West Moreton Health soon. #WestMoretonHealth #BoonahHospital #RuralHealthcare

  • West Moreton Health has linked with 10 Ipswich cafes and a car dealership network to drive awareness about the importance of regular bowel cancer screening. The cafe and car dealership campaigns will run during June, which is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. The 10 participating cafes will affix specially designed stickers on coffee cups, featuring the message, “Bowel Screening Saves Lives”. A total of 10,000 stickers have been distributed to the cafes. The Bundamba dealership will distribute 200 air fresheners featuring the message: “A simple bowel screen could save your life.” West Moreton Health Cancer Screening Health Promotion Officer Leanne Kelly said the health service was excited to collaborate with local businesses to increase awareness of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program. “West Moreton Health is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of our community. Partnerships like these play a pivotal role in reaching out to the public and encouraging them to prioritise their health," Ms Kelly said. “We are grateful for the support of our local cafes and dealerships in spreading awareness about bowel cancer screening. Together, we can empower individuals to take proactive steps towards their health and potentially save lives through early detection and prevention.” The campaign aims to increase awareness of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, which sends out free bowel cancer screening tests to eligible Australians aged 50-74. Bowel cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Australia; however, more than 90% of bowel cancers can be treated if detected early.  "Bowel cancer often develops without any symptoms. Regular screening can detect small changes early, leading to better prognosis. The screening kit is more than just another envelope – it is a vital tool for your health. It is quick, easy, and can be a true lifesaver. Remember to complete your at-home test as soon as it arrives.” In addition to providing participating stickers and air fresheners to the businesses, West Moreton Health will supply National Bowel Cancer Screening Program resources. The Ipswich community can join in this important campaign by taking photos of their coffee cup stickers and posting them on social media using #SipAndScreen #BowelCancerScreening, and remind loved ones who may have a bowel screening kit sitting at home to complete it.  Bowel cancer is most common in people over 50 but can occur at any age. “If something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it. Speak with your doctor about what test might be right for you,” Ms Kelly said. To order a replacement test, phone 1800 627 701. • ‘Providing care closer to home is a big reason I ended up in healthcare.’ As a Senior Physiotherapist at Gatton Hospital, Katie Draheim has never lost sight of her important role in the local community. After joining West Moreton Health in 2021, Katie has gradually transferred across from Ipswich Hospital to Gatton Hospital over the past two years as a part of a desire to help those in rural areas. ‘My passion for rural healthcare comes from wanting to provide resources to community members so they don't have to travel to metropolitan areas,’ she says. ‘My interest in healthcare probably started because I had family members who needed to go to bigger hospitals for health issues. ‘Growing up in a rural community, there was very limited hospital physio coverage that serviced our rural community so it was eye-opening when starting out in my career to see the expanse and variety of what physios can do. ‘The people I work with make it feel like we're making a real difference in the community. ‘The feedback we get is very positive and it aligns with my values. It's great to put that into practice every day.’ Katie says she gets great satisfaction from her role, offering some simple advice for anyone thinking of following her into rural healthcare. ‘It's an adventure. I encourage people to keep an open mind about rural healthcare,’ she says. ‘There's often an assumption that smaller communities don't have much to offer, but I find myself busier in my rural job than in previous ones. ‘Rural healthcare requires creativity, so you can’t be afraid to think outside the box. ‘I got very lucky because I love being a physio. It feels like a family here, I love coming to work every day.’ We're looking for more allied health professionals like Katie to join our health service. 💚 Check out our careers page for more info ➡ https://lnkd.in/gFp7Wb6R #WestMoretonHealth #GattonHospital #RuralHealthcare
