Rebuilding Shattered Lives - Advancing the health, wellbeing and human rights of people of refugee backgrounds.

About us

With more than 100 million people forcibly displaced across the world, specialist trauma-focused services that empower refugees to thrive have never been more important. The Victorian Foundation for Survivors of Torture Inc. (also known as Foundation House) was founded in 1987 to advance the health, wellbeing and human rights of people of refugee background who have experienced torture or other traumatic events. We have worked with over 100,000 people from more than 70 different communities and have grown from a single worker to a team of approximately 250 staff across five sites in metropolitan Melbourne and have partnerships with community organisations across Victoria. Foundation House is recognised as a national leader in the provision of trauma-informed and trauma-focused service delivery that effectively supports the recovery and settlement of our clients, their families and their communities. Our organisation is committed to maintaining a culture of continuous improvement at all levels and to being a responsible and positive partner with agencies in our sector, and beyond. Our services include counselling, advocacy, family support, group work, psychoeducation, information provision and complementary therapies. In addition, we deliver an expansive capacity building and engagement program with refugee communities and provide specialist trauma-informed training programs to professionals in the health, mental health, community, education, legal and government sectors. Foundation House also plays an active role in the provision of policy advice and advocacy to state and federal governments for improvements in policies and programs that affect the lives of refugees and asylum seekers.

  • On Friday 27 October 2023, Minister Clare O'Neil MP (Home Affairs & Cyber Security) had the opportunity to meet with a Ucan2 Group of young people, employers and mentors from Australia Post, Telstra, Coles, and Treasury Wine Estates at the Noble Park English Language School. The purpose of the visit was to showcase the fantastic work which has been occurring as part of the Youth Transition Support Program (YTS). YTS has been funding the program from the Department of Home Affairs since 2016 and, at this stage, it’s funded until 30 June 2024. The visit formed part of a broader advocacy strategy for six YTS providers across three states. Several young people and employers spoke about their experiences of participating in the Ucan2 group, work experience, mentoring and work, as part of YTS. The Minister and guests joined a Ucan2 session with current students. Students spoke about the program, what they have achieved throughout their time in the group, their hopes for the future and their experiences living in Australia. One student explained how Ucan2 helped him to connect with the local community group, Reclink, who provided a scholarship for a lifeguard course. He is now a qualified lifeguard and hopes to 'provide Australians with the same safety that Australians had provided' him. Ryan, the Store Manager from Coles Dandenong, spoke about how the young people from Ucan2 engage in work experience and employment at the store. He spoke about the value they add to the team and how they are always keen to work and look for ongoing opportunities. The experience for his team has been a greater understanding of the journeys and challenges the young people have faced and witnessing their positivity and hope for a bright future. Martine, an employer and mentor from Australia Post, spoke highly of the successful relationship between Australia Post and Foundation House which has been going for over 13 years. A mentee of the program spoke about how this experience changed his life. After arriving in Australia mid-2020, with limited English, he has now successfully established a landscaping business, and was happy to share his business cards with the group.
