Congratulations to Melbourne Airport on finally receiving approval from the Federal Transport Minister to commence construction on its $3 billion third runway project, bringing #Melbourne in line with Sydney and other major international airports around the world. The third runway will create 51,000 jobs in Victoria's tourism, agriculture, education, and other export industries, while adding $6 bn a year to the state economy. VTIC CEO, Felicia Mariani (GAICD) said this was such a critical win for our state when you consider that most of the extra $16bn in tourism growth projected in Victoria over the next five years would be driven by international visitors. "During peak periods, our airport is already running at near full capacity. The third runway is crucial to support not just future growth demand, but the current demand for visitation in Victoria,” Ms Mariani said. The project is set to be completed by 2031. This means #Victoria will finally see a level playing field with four runways to receive flights, including Melbourne Avalon Airport, as NSW is set to do with Sydney Airport supported by the opening of Western Sydney International Airport in 2026. #tourism #aviation #competitionisgood #futureproofing Lorie Argus Jim Parashos Andrew Lund Michael Cullen Sharaf Khan
