Kim Paino, UAC’s Chief Strategy and Engagement Officer, spoke at last week’s #HEFest24 in Adelaide. She took attendees on a deep dive into student trends and the life and preferences of Year 12 students through insights from UAC’s Student Lifestyle and Learning Report – Australia’s largest survey of Year 12s. Thank you to Future Campus for bringing the sector together to share ideas and best practice in higher education marketing!

IAAO Day 1! Thank you to higher education commentator Andrew Norton, Professor in the Practice of Higher Education Policy at The Australian National University, who kicked-off the IAAO conference program, hosted this year in Sydney by UAC, with a keynote presentation on Australia’s higher education system and the impact of changing government policy on admissions. We also heard from delegates from Canada (Heather Lane, Executive Director of Ontario Universities' Application Centre), Germany (Ulrich Schneider, Chief Executive Director of Uni-assist e.V.) and the United Kingdom (Ben Jordan, Director of Strategy, UCAS) who gave an overview of what was happening in their jurisdictions!

Late last week, UAC hosted an event in Sydney’s CBD, specifically targeting non-school leavers interested in career advancement or a career change. The event featured 15 of our participating universities and Teach NSW, attracting hundreds of attendees. Safe to say, the first year of CareerMoves was a resounding success!

We’re excited to welcome our colleagues from centralised higher education admissions services around the world to the International Association of Admissions Organisations conference 2024, hosted by UAC! Against the backdrop of our beautiful city of Sydney, it is a unique opportunity for information exchange, networking, and establishing valuable relationships with other admissions organisations. We look forward to three days of invigorating discussion of ideas, emerging trends and best practices, with a focus on how we respond to – and harness – social, economic, political and technological change.

UAC recently put out a warm welcome mat for member institutions for an information-packed day of workshops, demonstrations and a panel discussion focused on the future shape of university admissions. We were particularly interested to hear from special guests Sandra Milligan from Melbourne Assessment and Annette Cairnduff from Learning Creates Australia, who outlined how their organisations are implementing new ways of assessing the skills and capabilities of students. Thanks to everyone who attended for the great discussions and the useful feedback. #highereducation #AcademyofInteractiveTechnology #AustralianCollegeofAppliedPsychology #AustralianCollegeofPhysicalEducation #AIEInstitute #AustralianCatholicUniversity #UNSW #UniversityofCanberra #AustralianNationalUniversity #EducationCentreofAustralia #GriffithUniversity #MacquarieUniversity #TorrensUniversity #UniversityofNewcastle #UniversityofNotreDameAustralia #UniversityofSydney #UniversityofTechnologySydney #UniversityofWollongong #WesternSydneyUniversity

Here is *the full list* what nearly 17,000 Year 12 students consider when choosing what course to study! ⤵ 80% passion 64% employability 46% work experience and internships 42% quality of teaching 31% selection rank 21% university rankings 19% international opportunities Interestingly, once the decision is made, Year 12 students are nearly just as excited to meet new people as they are to pursue their passions!
Amid the cost-of-living crisis, university students are increasingly choosing degrees based on future job prospects, according to a new survey. The Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) annual lifestyle report found 64% students chose a course based on employability — up 7% from the previous year, The Sydney Morning Herald reports. Passion was still a key driver for 80% of students, but this was down 3%. The UAC study found while students were more concerned about high living expenses, mental health pressures had decreased. "We're seeing students making careful economic decisions around employment outcomes after they finish their study," spokeswoman Kim Paino said. "But they're also showing great resilience." In a post on LinkedIn, Cathy Sherry, a professor from Macquarie University, wrote that we need to stop telling young people to choose a degree based on their passion. "A tiny proportion of people are lucky enough to earn money doing something they're passionate about," she said. "For the rest of us, we're fortunate if we earn money doing something that interests us. We set young people up to have such skewed expectations of work telling them to follow their 'passion'." What do you think is a key factor for deciding what to study? Vote in our poll and share your thoughts in the comments below.
