2 years ago Brandon Read and the people of the Northern Rivers were hit with two devastating floods. Today, he is a resident at Tweed Street Village and is among the 1200 people still living in emergency accommodation. "Having the support workers here made a huge difference in being able to just process it all and feel like I'm not alone, basically," says Brandon. Despite being supported by the Uniting Recovery Support Service (RSS) team, Brandon lives with uncertainty in his temporary accommodation. ⁣ "There's a housing crisis, so there's not a lot of options. And I've come to really feel at home here," he says. "I've got friends here, community here, so I not really want to leave here." ⁣ We want to shine a light on people like Brandon and the Northern Rivers' community, and advocate for change. ⁣ #WeAreUniting #Homeless #Homelessness #HomelessnessWeek #Ageing #Care #auspol

📣 This just in: we’re proud to announce that Goodradigbee, in collaboration with Uniting, has achieved accreditation to provide foster care under the Permanency Support Program (PSP). Goodradigbee and Uniting NSW.ACT have been working since 2020 as transition allies to support the Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO) to become a Permanency Support Program (PSP) provider of choice for Aboriginal children, young people, families and carers in Western Sydney. Both partners are driven by a belief that a strong ACCO environment, and the transition of Aboriginal children and young people to their care, is crucial to support thriving, self-determining First Nations communities. Before the end of the year, Uniting will transition 29 Aboriginal children from Uniting to Goodradigbee's care with 15 children already successfully transitioned this month. This is a major step towards delivering culturally appropriate care to Aboriginal children and young people. Gavin Mackey, Executive Manager, Executive Manager of First Nations Strategy and Outcomes at Uniting said, “we recognise that transitioning our Aboriginal clients, services, and resources to ACCOs is a powerful and critical step towards self-determination. Actively supporting ACCO transitions allows for better and more choices for Aboriginal people to receive culturally responsive supports and holds us accountable to the ambitions laid out in our Uniting First Nations People and Place Strategy.” Caine Carroll, CEO of Goodradigbee Cultural and Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, added, “I understand the importance of Aboriginal people doing Aboriginal business, which is key to helping address families that need support as well as young people. We look forward to working alongside and listening to and supporting the staff, families, carers, children, and young people Goodradigbee will be supporting in our Permanency Support Program.” Our partnership will extend for another 12 months, ensuring sustainability through ongoing support, training, and quality assurance. Stay tuned for more updates on this important journey! #acco #fostercare #firstnations

Recently, a number of Uniting NSW.ACT's Early Intervention and Early Learning team members attended and presented at the 2024 Early Childhood Australia (ECA) National Conference in Brisbane. The conference was a valuable opportunity for opportunity for the two Uniting teams to connect, share insights and strengthen collaboration opportunities with each other and our peers. Our Early Intervention team shared the story of our Links to Early Learning program and emphasised the critical role of dedicated 'linkers' in supporting families facing disadvantage as they navigate non-financial and practical barriers to early learning. "A Linker walks alongside a family, navigating complex paths and the collaboration between the linker and the early learning service ensures the effective transition we all hope. The transition that every child deserves no matter their circumstances," said Susie Wilkins, Uniting Coordinator, Links to Early Learning. At Uniting, we believe all children deserve access to quality early learning. On World Clinical Exercise Physiology Day we acknowledge our incredible team.🤩 People like Michael, support our clients to manage their chronic health conditions and to ensure that they're able to remain safe, independent, healthy and functioning in their own home. "If I'm able to educate my clients on the benefits that exercise has on their health, it empowers them to take ownership of their health and it drives and motivates them to stay more active," says Michael. Thank you all. 👏❤️ #WeAreUniting #health #physio #Exercise #ExercisePhysiology #worldcepday #WorldClinicalExercisePhysiologyDay
