The Transport Accident Commission’s CEO Tracey Slatter has joined a state regional forum, the Bush Summit in Bendigo, highlighting the importance of using a Safe System approach to reduce road trauma.
The Safe System considers all elements of the road environment in
reducing trauma within four key areas - safe roads and roadsides, vehicle
safety, safe travel speeds, and safe road users.
“On a per capita basis, the investments made around road safety in
Victoria over decades has had a positive impact with the number of lives lost
on roads per head of population among the best in Australia,” said Tracey.
Sadly, as of today (August 30), 193 people have died on Victoria’s
roads, up 5% from 183 at this time last year.
"It’s hard at the moment when we’re faced with tragedies every day, but we’ve seen the trajectory, we know we can keep going and with
that safe system approach we’ll achieve a significant reduction and eventually – because all road accidents are preventable – we will be able to achieve that zero target,” she said.
“In rural and regional Victoria, the risk is greater because we
tend to be driving on faster speed roads... and what that means is if something goes wrong, the chances of an injury being serious or ending in fatality become far greater.”
Hosted by News Corp Australia, summits are being held nationwide to discuss solutions to challenges facing rural and regional areas, including road safety.
