Two months after we launched, Leigh Sales tweeted that The Squiz was her fave morning news summary... and our hearts stopped. It was one of those key moments that gave us a boost in the early days. 7 years on, we had the slightly surreal chance to interview her on our Newsmakers series. We had so much to ask: her 12 years at the helm of ABC's 7.30, her reflections on grief and news fatigue, her side hustle Chat 10 Looks 3, and why she’s taken on her new show The Assembly. Loved chatting to Kate Watson for the The Squiz News Club podcast about Capital Brief, media’s trust problem and the future of the Australian economy. Firmly believe there is not just room but a need for more voices in the Australian media landscape and there’s an opportunity to do things differently. Also passionately believe in the power of entrepreneurship and that it holds the key to driving our economy forward! https://lnkd.in/g-EP8Jpw

Newsmakers this week tackles the issue of local news and its viability here in Australia… https://lnkd.in/gVNwR_NJ
“Right now, I think if you were gonna be a slightly corrupt counsellor or a slightly dodgy cop in a small town, now's the time to do it because there aren't people on the ground watching. They just aren't.” That was Annabelle Hickson, founder of regional magazine Galah Press from an interview I did with her a few weeks ago in response to my question about the challenges facing local news outlets. It hit home. So Newsmakers this week is with Claire Stuchbery - the CEO of LINA: Local & Independent News Association. In our conversation, Claire points to some examples of where local reporting has been able to combat misinformation and surface stories that would not have been told otherwise. Most of us would agree this is important work. But if the business model doesn’t stack up, that means the ability for these newsrooms to continue is threatened. Claire doesn’t sugarcoat that reality. So the question becomes what does an Australia without local news look like? Claire is one person who’s doing her best to ensure we don’t find out. https://lnkd.in/gZREjkRT

With our Newshounds media literacy program, we're making the case that kids ned to be taught to be critical consumers of information BEFORE they get a smartphone. And as Bryce Corbett says, it should be as mandatory as learning to swim, slip-slop-slap your sunscreen, and to look both ways before crossing the road... Check out Bryce's op-ed in the SMH/The Age here: https://lnkd.in/g3PPb7j9
As a Parliamentary Inquiry into social media unfurls in our nation's capital, I make the case for mandatory media literacy education in primary schools in this op-ed published this weekend in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. Just as we were taught sun safety by Sid The Seagull and road safety by Hector The Cat - and in the same way we teach kids to swim before letting them loose at the beach - we need to be teaching kids to be critical consumers of information BEFORE they get a smartphone in their hands. And Squiz Kids' free media literacy program, Newshounds, is doing just that - with over 2,600 Australian primary school teachers signed up already. Given events in the US over the weekend, and the firestorm of conspiracy theories they have sparked on social media, it seems to me there's never been a more important time. https://lnkd.in/eQadfmXu
